Job summary

State of South Dakota in Rapid City, SD offers a Summer Internship - Highway Patrol. Shadow State Troopers to learn traffic enforcement, crash scene mapping, sobriety checks, and participate in safety talks with troopers and specialty units.

You will also assist with district office tasks, such as inventory and records keeping, while pursuing a career in law enforcement. Enrollment as a part-time or full-time student is required with preference for SD residents and students from SD institutions.

Qualifications

• Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply.
• By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
• All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
• Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation. An arrest/conviction record will not necessarily bar employment.
• Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening.

Responsibilities

• Shadow State Troopers while they enforce traffic laws, assist crash reconstructionists while mapping a crash scene, and assist with sobriety and safety checks.
• Attend safety talks with troopers, shadow the specialty units such as the recon, SWAT Mobile Force, Drone Operators, K9 handlers and Task Force Troopers.
• Assist the district office with Administrative duties such as supply inventory and records keeping.
