Job summary

Aberdeen, SD-based Department of Public Safety - Highway Patrol seeks an Intern for the Summer session (May–August). The role involves assisting office staff with projects on operations and administrative plans and shadowing troopers during field activities.

Interns help with crash scene mapping, crash investigations, reconstructions, firearms training sessions, sobriety checkpoints, and learning motor carrier laws and bus inspections.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled as a part-time or full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute.
• By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their program.
• Preference may be given to South Dakota residents and students of South Dakota institutions.

Responsibilities

• Assist office staff with special projects dealing with operations and administrative plans.
• Shadow troopers and office personnel during patrol duties.
• Assist with crash scene mapping, crash investigations, and reconstruction of crashes.
• Assist with firearms training sessions.
• Assist with sobriety checkpoints and motor carrier enforcement laws, including bus inspections.
• May participate in SWAT training scenarios.
• Work irregular hours outside 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., including weekends and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
• Perform other duties deemed feasible.
