Job summary

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia's Facilities Management Landscape Services is seeking a Landscape Turf Supervisor to oversee a maintenance zone, coordinating staff, inspections, and renewal projects to meet the Landscape Management Plan.

This on-site role manages 10–12 crew members, plans labor and material costs, emphasizes safety and OSHA compliance, and ensures turf health across UVA grounds, including gardens, trees, and ponds, supporting university events.

Qualifications

• Four years of experience required.
• VA driver's license; OSHA training/tests may be required.

Responsibilities

• Inspect grounds, prioritize tasks, assign work to crews, and provide feedback.
• Plan and oversee HR functions, including hiring and evaluations.

• Maintain workplace safety and ensure policy compliance (OSHA).
• Record and track work using computer and mobile apps.
• Manage turf care operations: mowing, fertilization, seeding, sod, irrigation, pests, weeds, leaf collection.
• Supervise 10–12 staff to maintain healthy turf.
• Oversee contracted mowing services and ensure compliance with nutrient plans.
• Coordinate snow and ice removal efforts.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Landscape Turf Supervisor

The Facilities Management (FM) Landscape Services department is seeking a Landscape Turf Supervisor to join their team! Each Supervisor responsible for a designated Maintenance Zone ensuring service and quality standards meet the level called for by our Landscape Management Plan. This is accomplished by overseeing the day-to-day activities of their team through efficient coordination of staff assignments, continuous inspections, and scheduling corrective and renewal projects with other members of the department. This position supports Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost effective, and reliable maintenance and service to University Grounds.

Landscape Supervisors develop and sustain positive working relationships through tactful and constructive in-person and written communication skills. As part of the management team, Supervisors must be proficient technology users, able to navigate essential UVA systems and email on a computer, tablet, and/or smart phone.

UVA FM's Landscape Services department is tasked with maintaining nearly 1,200 total acres of Grounds with over 300 being intensely managed space. Responsibilities include care of elaborate botanical gardens, thousands of trees, multiple storm water ponds and basins, large areas of turf, collecting litter and supporting countless University events to just name a few. The overarching task for the department is ensuring that the Grounds of the University are safe, and healthy using sustainable landscape management practices.

Facilities Management supports the University of Virginia's wide range of academic, research, and patient care programs. With nearly 1,200 employees, Facilities Management incorporates the values of respect, integrity, stewardship, and collaboration into its service operations and internal programs. The organization is dedicated to service excellence and is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

• Record and track work using computer and mobile applications.
• Manage turf care operations, including mowing, fertilization, seeding, sod installation, irrigation systems, pest and weed control, and seasonal leaf collection.
• Supervise 10-12 staff members to ensure healthy, well-maintained turf.
• Oversee contracted mowing services and ensure compliance with the State Nutrient Management Plan.
• Coordinate snow and ice removal efforts.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience: Four years of experience.
• Licensure/Certifications: Valid VA driver's license. Certification may be required for specific equipment usage. Must receive specialized training and successfully complete written and performance tests to comply with OSHA code.

Physical Demands

This job will require standing, traveling, and lifting above and below the waist various weights which may include different landscape equipment and materials. The use of both hands and repetitive motion will be required while pruning, driving, weeding, and pushing lawn mowers.

Salary Range

The anticipated hiring range is $26.00-$29.00, commensurate with education and experience.
