Job summary

Modern Disposal – Western New York is seeking a Landfill Environmental Specialist to support landfill and waste management operations. The role focuses on regulatory compliance, environmental performance, and data management using Microsoft tools.

The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field and 2+ years in waste management or environmental compliance; PE/EIT and NYS DEC familiarity are a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field.
• 2+ years of experience in waste management, landfill operations, or environmental compliance preferred.
• Experience with waste profiling, approvals, and characterization.
• Knowledge of stormwater, leachate, and landfill gas systems and monitoring requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, SharePoint, Teams, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Experience with environmental data tracking and reporting systems.
• HAZWOPER certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and manage waste profiles for incoming materials.
• Conduct waste characterization and approval in accordance with facility permits and regulatory requirements.
• Assess waste streams through analytical reports and generator documentation to ensure compliance and determine handling or disposal methods.
• Ensure compliance with EPA/RCRA and NYSDEC regulations, permits, and operating plans.
• Support environmental control systems, including stormwater management, SPCC plans, leachate handling, and GCCS.
• Assist with sampling, monitoring, and reporting for stormwater, leachate, and landfill gas programs.
• Maintain records using Microsoft tools (Excel, SharePoint, Teams, etc.).
• Analyze environmental data to support compliance reporting and improvements.
• Coordinate with operations staff, customers, transporters, and regulators for proper waste handling.
