Job summary

The Idaho Bureau of Laboratories, part of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, is hiring a full-time Laboratory Technician in Boise.   • Good knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures, and the fundamental laboratory methods relating to chemistry or biology.
  • Experience performing standardized laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures.
  • Experience calculating and recording test results.
  • Experience maintaining a clean, sterile, and safe laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and verify laboratory samples and supplies; collect, label, and document specimens.
  • Deliver specimens to the appropriate programs within the laboratory.
  • Perform daily temperature and calibration checks on laboratory devices to ensure accuracy.
  • Peer-review submission data to ensure there are no transcription errors.
  • Assist testing staff by preparing microbiology media as requested and support a dynamic workflow with a teammate.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare’s Idaho Bureau of Laboratories is seeking to fill a full-time permanent position for Laboratory Technician in Boise. We are seeking a candidate who excels in a fast-paced team environment and can balance a workload while coordinating multiple priorities. This position requires excellent customer service skills and attention to detail. The incumbent will serve as the first point of contact for laboratory clients. This position ensures that all submissions meet laboratory requirements. This will involve communicating with hospitals and other submitters to obtain missing or verify discordant sample information. This position will routinely handle specimens in a biosafety cabinet, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, adhere to safe laboratory practices, and accurately enter sample information into a Laboratory Information Management System. Responsibilities also include receiving of laboratory supplies, delivery of specimens to appropriate programs within the laboratory, performing daily temperature and calibration checks on various lab devices, and peer-review of submission form data to ensure no transcription errors are made. The role also supports testing staff by preparing microbiology media as requested. This position works closely as a team with another laboratory technician in a dynamic workflow environment.

This position is not eligible for telework.

  • Ensures glassware and equipment are washed and sterilized
  • Receives ordered supplies, completes order documentation, and notifies appropriate staff of receipt
  • Makes laboratory media and reagents and performs required quality assurance testing
  • Processes bio-waste per established procedure (i.e., autoclaving)

If relocating to Idaho, the Department of Health & Welfare does not reimburse the cost of relocating and the department does not sponsor anyone with a work visa.
