Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) seeks a Laboratory Specialist Supervisor for the Physical Sciences to oversee lab operations at South Mountain Community College. The role emphasizes safety, equipment readiness, and student/technician supervision in chemistry and physics labs.

Responsibilities include designing and piloting labs, supervising staff, managing budgets and materials, and maintaining lab documentation.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree and 4+ years related full-time experience in instructional lab support or equipment handling.
  • HS Diploma/GED with 6+ years related full-time instructional support experience including lead work.
  • Bachelor's degree and related MCCCD experience in academic labs or science education preferred.

Responsibilities

  • 35% Laboratory preparation & faculty support: assists design, pilot, and troubleshoot labs; prepares setups and materials.
  • 25% Laboratory staff supervision & oversight: supervise lab technicians and student workers.
  • 20% Budget, inventory & materials management: manage budget, stock and ordering.
  • 15% Laboratory maintenance, cleanup & documentation: breakdown labs, clean equipment, maintain prep sheets.
  • 5% Equipment assembly & repair: assemble and repair lab equipment.

Supervises and trains staff in the preparation of equipment and materials used for lecture and laboratory experiments in the physical lab sciences (Chemistry and Physics). Develops and implements laboratory safety procedures that adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, as well as outreach activities that promote science education.

  • 35% Laboratory Preparation & Faculty Support - Assists faculty in the design, pilot, and trouble-shooting of physical science labs Prepares lab set ups and ensures all materials are available for lab.
  • 25% Laboratory Staff Supervision & Oversight - Supervises science lab technicians and student workers as well as grant recipients working in the labs
  • 20% Budget, Inventory & Materials Management- Maintains budget, stock room, prep room, inventory and orders materials as needed
  • 15% Laboratory Maintenance, Cleanup & Documentation - Helps break down labs and clean labs and equipment including inventory and lab prep sheet maintenance through troubleshooting labs
  • 5% Equipment Assembly & Repair - Assembles and repairs equipment
  • Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution, four (4) years of directly related full-time experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities including two (2) years of lead work or senior level experience.
  • H.S. Diploma/G.E.D. from a regionally accredited institution, six (6) years of directly related full-time experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities including two (2) years of lead work or senior level experience.
  • A. Bachelor's degree earned from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • B. Experience working in an academic laboratory setting
  • C. Experience providing guidance related to laboratory experiments
  • D. Knowledge of or ability to help pilot science laboratories for college level classes for the physical sciences
  • E. Experience in maintaining a budget
  • F. Experience in supervising laboratory staff including laboratory technicians and college work study students
  • G. One year of relevant full-time MCCCD experience within the past two years.
  • ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood or other body fluids); and moderate exposure to intense noise.
