Job summary

Fairview Health Services seeks a Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) for the Lakes Hospital laboratory team. This temporary overnight position runs 8:00 PM–6:30 AM, Wednesday–Sunday, about 50 hours per two‑week pay period, through October 2026.

The LCT collects specimens, enters data into LIS/HIS, and supports the lab operations 24/7 in a high‑volume setting. The role emphasizes accurate specimen handling, phlebotomy at multiple sites, and collaboration with a diverse clinical team.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of formal phlebotomy education program.
  • Minimum three months full‑time clinical phlebotomy and lab experience.
  • Enrollment in MLT/MLS program with phlebotomy coursework.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Basic Life Support certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain biological specimens following SOPs and guidelines.
  • Perform phlebotomy at various sites and note special handling needs.
  • Enter orders and collection data into LIS/HIS accurately.
  • Schedule tests/procedures and communicate results.
  • Monitor quality control and maintain equipment.
  • Assist with safety and infection control procedures.
  • Support training of students and new staff.
  • Prioritize workload to optimize patient outcomes.

Job Overview

Fairview is seeking a Laboratory Care Technician to join the Laboratory team at M Health Fairview Lakes Hospital.

This is a temporary position running through October 2026, offering an excellent opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in a hospital laboratory setting. The position works overnight shifts from 8:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Wednesday through Sunday, averaging approximately 50 hours per two‑week pay period. Additional hours may be available, and the selected candidate may have opportunities to pick up extra shifts based on department needs. The Lakes Medical Center Acute Care Laboratory comprises approximately 30 team members, who staff the department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The team performs collections and testing in the areas of chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and transfusion medicine for patients of all ages.

Working with diverse populations within a healthcare environment, the Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with M Health Fairview Values as they interact with our patients, families, and co‑workers. The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection at various M Health Fairview or outreach locations, as well as provides for safe and secure specimen handling and point of care testing. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems; monitoring computer logs for incomplete work; scheduling tests/procedures and providing results in LIS/HIS and over the phone, the LCT’s attention to detail and accuracy are the foundation for our providing quality laboratory services. Working as an individual or team member, the LCT continuously works towards providing quality service improvement and optimum support to the department and team members in achieving M Health Fairview’s goals.

Responsibilities
  • Follows established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.
  • Collects biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of the specimen.
  • Uses appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with point care testing and/or waived testing.
  • May perform EKGs.
  • May train others in phlebotomy skills.
  • Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing, including properly identified.
  • Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.
  • Performs daily quality control, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance.
  • Monitors inventory, ordering and restocking supplies.
  • Mentors and teaches students.
  • Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Prioritizes assigned work.
  • Transports blood and body fluid under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner.
  • Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.
  • Information processing.
  • Accurately enters and releases order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.
  • Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.
  • Schedules tests/procedures.
  • Provides results in LIS/HIS and reports over the phone.
  • Acquires additional computer skills as appropriate to the work area.
  • Supports and adheres to laboratory quality assurance program.
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Adheres to safety protocols.
  • Follows infection control guidelines.
  • Responds appropriately to emergent situations.
Required Qualifications
  • High School graduate, equivalent, or a higher degree. Diploma, GED, equivalency evaluation, or transcript must be provided.
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program.
  • Completion of three months of full‑time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience.
  • Enrollment in MLT or MLS program including completion of a phlebotomy course.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Demonstrates competence and proficient skills in collecting blood samples.
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.
  • Some positions will require reliable transportation.

The posted compensation range corresponds to the minimum and maximum pay rates outlined in your union agreement for the respective job classifications at the time of job posting. An individual's pay rate within this range may be influenced by various factors, including FTE, skills, knowledge, educational background, and qualifying experience as specified in the contract.
