Job summary

Fairview Health Services seeks a Laboratory Care Technician to support M Health Fairview Clinic locations in Hugo, North Branch, Chisago City and Wyoming. Shifts 6:30am–6:00pm; travel between sites; 8-hour shifts; flex workforce with augmentation pay and mileage per IRS rules.

The LCT will collect specimens, enter data into LIS/HIS, perform POCT, and provide results by phone. A phlebotomy program and strong customer service are required; travel and flexibility are essential.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or higher; diploma/GED required.
  • Formal phlebotomy education program completed.
  • Three months of full-time phlebotomy/lab experience or enrollment in MLT/MLS with phlebotomy.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Strong customer service background in diverse settings.
  • Ability to work under stress and exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrates manual dexterity and proficiency in blood collection.
  • BLS within 90 days of clinic work.

Responsibilities

  • Follow guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.

  • Use effective communication to meet patient and family needs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with point-of-care/waived testing.

Job description

Job Overview

Fairview is looking for a casual day/evening shift Laboratory Care Technician to work at M Health Fairview Clinic - Hugo, M Health Fairview Clinic - North Branch, M Health Fairview Clinic - Chisago City, and M Health Fairview Clinic - Wyoming. Hours vary with a start time of 6:30am and end times of 6pm. Fridays the latest shift is 8:30am - 5:00pm. Shifts are 8-hours long.


This position is a Contract Flex Workforce position with an additional augmentation pay and mileage in accordance to IRS regulations to compensate for travel expectations between clinic sites.


Working with diverse populations within a healthcare environment, the Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with M Health Fairview Values as they interact with our patients, families, and co-workers. The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection at various M Health Fairview or outreach locations, as well as provides for safe and secure specimen handling and point of care testing. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems; monitoring computer logs for incomplete work; scheduling tests/procedures and providing results in LIS/HIS and over the phone, the LCT's attention to detail and accuracy are the foundation for our providing quality laboratory services. Working as an individual or team member, the LCT continuously works towards providing quality service improvement and optimum support to the department and team members in achieving M Health Fairview's goals.


Responsibilities


  • Follows established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.

  • Collects biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

  • Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of the specimen.

  • Uses appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs.

  • Demonstrates proficiency with point care testing and/or waived testing.

  • May perform EKGs.

  • May train others in phlebotomy skills.

  • Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing, including properly identified.

  • Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.

  • Performs daily quality control, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance.

  • Monitors inventory, ordering and restocking supplies.

  • Mentors and teaches students.

  • Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

  • Prioritizes assigned work.

  • Transports blood and body fluid under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner.

  • Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.

  • Information processing.

  • Accurately enters and releases order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.

  • Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.

  • Schedules tests/procedures.

  • Provides results in LIS/HIS and reports over the phone.

  • Acquires additional computer skills as appropriate to the work area.

  • Supports and adheres to laboratory quality assurance program.

  • Maintains a safe work environment.

  • Adheres to safety protocols.

  • Follows infection control guidelines.

  • Responds appropriately to emergent situations.

  • Flex workforce employees do not have a permanent “home” clinic location and support a region of clinics.

  • The length of the assignment at a location will vary based on need (i.e. 1 day for ill call or an extended period of time to fill in for a leave of absence), which includes the expectation to travel to more than one clinic during the day.

  • Flex workforce employees regularly travel to multiple clinics to fill open shifts and “regular” travel is defined as the expectation to be available to travel 100% at any time to different locations based on the business needs.


Required Qualifications


  • High School graduate, equivalent, or a higher degree. • Diploma, GED, equivalency evaluation, or transcript must be provided. and

  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program or

  • Completion of three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience or

  • Enrollment in MLT or MLS program including completion of a phlebotomy course.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.

  • Demonstrate manual dexterity.

  • Demonstrates competence and proficient skills in collecting blood samples.

  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross) when working in a clinic setting within 90 Days


Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.

  • Some positions will require reliable transportation.

An individual's pay rate within this range may be influenced by various factors, including FTE, skills, knowledge, educational background, and qualifying experience as specified in the contract.
