Job Overview

Fairview Range is hiring a Laboratory Care Technician for our Laboratory Department in Hibbing, MN.

As a Laboratory Care Technician (LCT), you will work with a diverse population within our healthcare environment and play an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with Fairview Values as you interact with patients, families, and coworkers. The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection, safe specimen handling and point‑of‑care testing when appropriate. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems, monitoring computer logs for inaccuracies, scheduling tests/procedures and providing results in the LIS/HIS and over the phone. The LCT’s attention to detail and accuracy lay the foundation for delivering excellent laboratory services. Working as both an individual and a team member, the LCT continuously seeks to improve quality and support the department and team in achieving Fairview’s goals.

Schedule

This position will work 72 to 80 hours per two weeks. The shift length will be 8 hours on the day/evening shift. Weekends: every other weekend.

About this department

The hospital lab at Fairview Range provides 24/7 support for Fairview Range Medical Center and the Fairview Mesaba Clinics. It is CAP accredited and includes a fully functional microbiology lab with molecular testing, and on‑site pathology support. Collaboration with M Health Fairview laboratory systems provides patients with local access to an extensive array of lab services.

  • CAP accredited.
  • Lab consists of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, coagulation, transfusion medicine including antibody identification, microbiology, histology, cytology, and pathology.
  • Part of multidisciplinary care team supporting each inpatient department.
  • Lab staff include MLS/MT, HT, MLT, and LCT as well as tech specialists in various lab sections.

Responsibilities
  • Follow established guidelines to obtain specimens and perform procedures.
  • Obtain blood specimens for all identified populations.
  • Perform phlebotomy at various sites to meet patient/family and other customer needs.
  • Use appropriate communication skills to meet patient/family and customer needs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with point‑of‑care testing when applicable.
  • Train others in phlebotomy skills.
  • Ensure specimens are acceptable for testing, including proper identification.
  • Process specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.
  • Perform daily quality control, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance for tools in the department.
  • Monitor inventory, ordering, and restocking supplies.
Required Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program.
  • Training as a phlebotomist, clinical assistant, MLA, MLT, MT, LPN, or one year of healthcare‑related work experience.
  • Phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory.
  • Certification as a phlebotomist.
