Responsibilities

We can’t express enough how important our lab staff is to our mission and calling! As a lab assistant with CommonSpirit Health, you will be assisting with a variety of procedures. You will be receiving and preparing for the tests as they come in, as well as performing some testing as allowed. Some of what you’ll do:

1. Practice positive patient identification at all times, in all job functions.
2. Practice HumanKindness and courtesy with all patient and co-worker interactions and maintain good communication within the department and throughout the hospital.
3. Take responsibility for the department workflow and assist all members of the team to maintain department workflow and efficiency, creating an atmosphere that fosters teamwork and collaboration.
4. Process specimens into the lab, organized for department distribution, and move samples quickly for testing.
5. May perform allowed laboratory testing following written technical policies and procedures.
6. Evaluate and release test results under the direction of a Clinical Lab Scientist, evaluating result validity considering quality control results, instrument performance, specimen integrity, and prior patient results.
7. Handle Laboratory Send-out testing, processing and organizing packing lists and packaging for testing sent to external laboratories.
8. Use good judgment when problem-solving and request help when needed.
9. May perform phlebotomy, following blood collection procedures and utilizing appropriate collection techniques to obtain samples adhering to quality and quantity requirements.
10. May assist with phlebotomy training under the direction of the supervisor and/or coordinator.
11. Perform routine maintenance on lab equipment and maintain records as trained.
12. Monitor department supply inventory, assist in stocking, and complete reagent logs.

Qualifications

Required:

1. High School Diploma or GED
2. BLS-CPR within 90 days of hire
3. Excellent customer service and time management skills

Preferred:

1. 6 Months experience in an acute care facility
2. Lab Assistant and/or Phlebotomy certification
