Medical Laboratory Technician

Performs clinical microbiology tests using manual and automated techniques. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Understands and adheres to the WPH performance standards, policies, and behaviors.
- Laboratory testing personnel responsibilities include following the laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintaining records of these tests.
- Maintains records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested consistently with patient specimens.
- Adheres to quality assurance procedures, including documentation of quality control activities, instrument verifications, and maintenance.
- Identifies and documents problems affecting test performance and notifies supervisors, taking corrective actions as needed.
- Ensures accuracy and quality of results across all testing phases.
- Notifies clinicians and patient units of critical values, maintaining STAT turnaround times.
- Participates in regulatory readiness (CAP, AABB, NYSDOH, Joint Commission).
- Maintains 12 Continuing Education credits annually.
- Participates in SOPs, proficiency testing, inspections, and quality programs, including reporting non-conformances.
- Evaluates test results for abnormalities and confirms results as per protocols under supervision.
- Participates in validations, training, and competency assessments.
- Manages inventory, including lot numbers, expiration dates, labeling, and QC.
- Completes mandatory training, in-services, and ongoing education.
- Performs microbiology tests (Bacteriology, Parasitology, Virology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Susceptibilities, Molecular testing) under supervision.
- Performs other duties as assigned under supervision.
Education & Experience Requirements:
- Current NYS Clinical Laboratory Technician License required.
- Associate’s degree in Medical Technology or related science with one year hospital experience.

Exposure to chemicals as per SDS; access SDS via hospital intranet or switchboard.

- All populations, including Neonatal, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric, and patients with special needs.
- Non-patient care population and bariatric patients with weight-related comorbidities.
