Job summary

Bassett Healthcare Network is seeking a Laboratory Support Technician to perform venous and capillary blood collection for adult and pediatric patients. You will order tests in the LIS, process specimens, and ensure accurate labeling while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Training may be provided for new staff. The role emphasizes quality specimen handling, timely processing, and adherence to hospital policies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1 year of experience in a similar capacity preferred but not required.
• CPT-A Phlebotomy Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Identifies patients by verifying name, DOB, and medical record number before specimen collection.
• Performs routine/STAT phlebotomy and labels specimens in presence of the patient.
• Communicates with patients about procedures, ensuring confidentiality per HIPAA.
• Collects high-quality specimens from all age groups, meeting draw standards.
• Reviews specimens and requisitions for correct tests and labeling.
• Delivers specimens to LIS and reference labs promptly per policy.
• Trains new staff as requested.
• Performs other duties within scope of practice.
