Job summary

Qualifications

• Identify and evaluate proper specimen collection and storage.
• Manual dexterity and acuity to prepare specimens and operate instrumentation.
• Concentrate for long periods, use good judgment, work accurately under pressure.
• Interpersonal verbal and written English communication with physicians and colleagues.
• Ability to perform venipuncture.
• Proficiency with computers and related software.

Responsibilities

• Label and identify specimens and requisitions; record discrepancies for QA.
• Inventory and maintain supplies; restock workstations.
• Monitor reagents and communicate needs for timely purchasing.
• Receive, archive and discard specimens per procedures.
• Prepare benches and reload instruments for daily workload.
• Prepare infectious waste for transport per safety policy.
• Monitor temperature/humidity and maintain equipment charts.
• Organize and file specimens; assist in retrieval for testing.
• Perform send-out tasks and administrative duties.
• Assist with specimen receipt, triage and quality monitoring.
• Maintain department policies including QA, safety and infection control.
• Follow JCAHO patient safety goals and hospital policies.
• Monitor Satellite Accumulation Areas and transport chemical waste per MWRA rules.
• Assist with routine and special projects.
