The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has been the leader in nursing education in North Carolina throughout its history. Established in 1950, it was the first school of nursing in North Carolina to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program followed by the first master’s degree program, the first continuing education program for nurses, first doctoral program, and first accelerated BSN option to students with college degrees. Today, the School is renowned for its academic programs, its research and its commitment to clinical and community service within state, national and global communities.

Position Summary

The School of Nursing seeks a temporary lab operations manager to cover a leave of absence and help us maintain our excellent standard of nursing education. This is a 40-hour per week onsite position.

The EISLE Nursing Lab Operations Manager staff position will support EISLE labs through set-up, break-down, and inventory management for prelicensure and graduate labs. They will use materials and evaluation criteria developed by EISLE Director and Assistant Director to teach and evaluate undergraduate students. This position collaborates with the EISLE team to ensure that laboratory operations run safely and efficiently. This position requires the incorporation of evidence-based practice into clinical skill acquisition.

Responsibilities

Operational Lab Support

  • Lab Environment:
    • Adhere to a semester calendar to ensure accurate lab preparation in a timely manner and to independently anticipate preparation requirements for each upcoming lab for designated content in multiple courses each week.
    • Maintain the lab environment: set up and break down labs, including stock and restock supplies; clean and repackage reusable supplies.
    • Maintaining equipment and supplies, including inventory lists and tracking.
    • Maintaining an orderly and tidy environment in labs, staging/storage areas, and all workspaces.
  • Maintaining Inventory (consumables and equipment):
    • Monitor equipment: troubleshoot equipment for functionality, perform routine equipment maintenance, and notify Assistant Director of equipment problems.
    • Monitor the inventory of supplies and equipment, forecasting quantity and types of supplies and equipment needed for upcoming semesters.
    • Plan and order supplies for upcoming labs and upcoming semesters in consultation with Assistant Director and Director.
    • Assist with the ordering, preparation, and assembly of student supply bags each year.
    • Using the SON applications database (NurSys), check equipment out and in and send email notices to borrowers.
    • Assist with an annual inventory of supplies and equipment.
    • Assist with set up and break down, and transportation of equipment for simulations.
  • Support Teaching and Evaluation of Students
    • Review modules and other teaching materials to assist lab setup. Use EISLE approved teaching-learning principles and training materials to inform set up for teaching and evaluation of nursing students.
  • Data Mining:
    • Handle security documents in compliance with Family Education Rights and Privacy Act ( FERPA ) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ( HIPPA ).
    • Data collection of performance on clinical skill evaluations and analysis of data to determine variances in teaching across laboratory sections and to identify gaps in learning.
    • Data collection on inter-rater reliability of evaluators and analysis of data to determine equal and fair evaluation of learners.
    • Track student attendance at mandatory and optional labs. Provide record keeping and review of student tardiness and absences from labs to assure timely completion of assigned lab modules.
    • Attend regularly scheduled EISLE training sessions.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Experience working in laboratory environment. The ability to oversee lab operations. Manage laboratory inventory.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Degree from appropriately accredited institutions. Unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina. 2 years of employment or the equivalent as an RN in direct medical surgical, pediatric or maternal nursing. Knowledge and experience in clinical nursing and teaching. Comfortable being filmed/photographed demonstrating nursing skills. The ability to teach small groups and answer questions while demonstrating nursing skills. The ability to provide oversight and answer questions to students independently practicing different skills.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to support lab set up for teaching complex nursing skills. Management of operational activities requires the ability to read and apply literature related to procedures, ability to interpret data noting patterns of student performance, ability to coordinate multiple projects, ability to document procedures, ability to monitor resources and initiate ordering to maintain inventory within a designated budget.
  • This position is responsible for set-up and break-down of skills labs according to the EISLE protocol. This position requires standing, bending, cleaning, and restocking. Moderate to heavy lifting (up to 35 pounds by self, up to 70 pounds with assistance) is required for about 10% of the job, such as moving manikins, equipment, boxes of supplies, and stocking shelves with supplies. Lifting supply boxes overhead will require the use of step stools. Knowledge of lifting techniques, use of lifting equipment, and body mechanics is important. All duties to be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • With appropriate notice, work at night and/or weekends rarely, if needed.
  • Hazards include potential blood and body fluids exposure as the students learn to do finger sticks, injections, and phlebotomy. Proper techniques are taught and proper disposal of sharps and used supplies are stressed to avoid needlestick injury or blood exposure. Disposal of contaminated sharps is part of the employee’s job and precautions are taken to prevent inadvertent exposure. Exposure to latex and cleaning materials is frequent.
