SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the receipt of biological specimens into the department, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and performing testing. It reports to the department supervisor and works closely with lab technical personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Exhibits excellence in customer service through appropriate attitude and interaction with all patients, visitors, and staff.
2. Adheres to and supports team members in exhibiting TMCH values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication.
3. Follows TMCH organizational and department-specific safety and confidentiality policies and standards.
4. Performs basic technical processes as assigned, based on specific department requirements. Performs testing under supervision, adhering to policies and performance standards.
5. Logs specimens into the laboratory and Laboratory Information System (LIS); receives or collects specimens and labels them appropriately.
6. Stores specimens for future reference or discards them after testing.
7. Coordinates and routes specimens to the proper laboratory area. Tracks and locates missing specimens.
8. Demonstrates understanding of computer systems used in the department. Generates work lists as required.
9. Performs basic maintenance checks on laboratory equipment.
10. Performs routine laboratory processes and procedures according to protocols and schedules.
11. Uses safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.
12. Participates in quality control, safety, and preventive maintenance programs.
13. Complies with accrediting and regulatory requirements related to the area of responsibility.
14. Performs related duties within guidelines to meet turnaround times.

TMC Rincon Specific Responsibilities

Laboratory Assistants at TMC Rincon will also perform Phlebotomy duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Education: High school diploma or GED.
• Experience: One (1) month of related lab experience.
• Licensure or Certification: None required.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Skill in maintaining, processing, and recording lab samples and specimens.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, instructions, and manuals.
• Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
• Effective listening and communication skills.
• Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
• Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions.
• Problem-solving skills involving standard variables.
