Job summary

Masa is seeking a highly qualified K–5 literacy expert to serve as a Literacy Specialist.

This role involves conducting onsite literacy assessments, developing tailored, differentiated lesson plans; and training staff, interns and volunteer tutors to effectively implement the curriculum, as well as to develop and implement push-in Literacy support strategies, to engage students enrolled in Masa’s summer and year-round academic support programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in education, literacy, or related field; NYS certification preferred.
• Knowledge of state/national literacy efforts including Science of Reading and evidence-based practice.
• Experience as classroom teacher or literacy specialist for K–5.
• Strong understanding of grade-level reading and writing expectations.
• Excellent classroom management with positive discipline approaches.
• Experience supporting ELLs, students with IEPs, and immigrant families.
• Culturally responsive curriculum development experience.
• Ability to mentor staff, interns, and volunteers to implement curriculum.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Knowledge of current literacy trends and effective instruction.
• Sensitivity to social-emotional needs; familiarity with Latin American immigrant communities helpful

Responsibilities

• Conduct literacy assessments to inform curriculum design and measure student progress.
• Lead benchmarking, screening assessments, progress monitoring, and targeted interventions.
• Develop differentiated K–5 literacy curriculum with engaging tools and strategies.
• Deliver onsite literacy coaching and instructional support to K–5 participants.
• Create individualized literacy support plans for students struggling with literacy.
• Differentiate instruction for ELLs and students with IEPs.
• Supervise and train staff, interns, and volunteers implementing the curriculum.
