Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools seeks a skilled sign language interpreter to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students across grades K-12. The role involves interpreting for IEP meetings, parent conferences, and Deaf staff, as well as school activities and field trips.

The interpreter will mentor new staff, promote cultural understanding, and continue professional development to maintain state or national credentials recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; Successful completion of a passing score on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Written Test.
• Minimum of a Level 3.5 on the EIPA Performance Test or equivalent state/national certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
• Preferred: Associate Degree or higher.

Responsibilities

• Interpret all content and special subject areas for deaf or hard-of‑hearing students, K-12, as needed by IEPs.
• Interpret for IEP meetings, parent conferences and Deaf staff members (ASL teacher and assistants).
• Interpret activities during the school day including assemblies, performances, announcements, and field trips.
• Interpret other assignments outside the school day such as tutoring, club meetings, disciplinary actions, bus situations, sports, PTA meetings, etc.
• Mentor newly hired interpreters and students from Interpreter Training Programs.
• Promote cultural understanding and serve as a language role model for deaf students.
