Job summary

Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Boston is seeking a Juvenile Justice Youth Development Specialist II, Shift Supervisor, Suffolk Detention Unit to supervise youth and staff in a secure residential setting, ensuring safety, order, and compliance with policies.

The role involves monitoring youth behavior, conducting intake, maintaining records, delivering crisis and behavior management, and training new staff, with an emphasis on positive youth development and collaboration with law enforcement

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience with at-risk or justice-involved youth.
• Ability to supervise and assign work to staff.
• Knowledge of PYD and DBT beneficial.
• Proven ability to maintain calm in stressful situations.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Observe youth conduct and ensure safety; perform one-to-one watch as needed.
• Maintain custody and security through rounds and searches.
• Supervise up to six JJYDS I staff per shift.
• Assist JJYDS III in his/her absence and run shift operations.
• Document intake, incidents, transport and logs.
• Maintain documentation and improve systems.
• Provide crisis management and group sessions to develop life skills.
• Lead by example and participate in meetings and training.
• Orient new staff and coach on emergency responses.
