Rumpke is a family-owned and operated company that ranks as one of the largest firms in the waste and recycling industry. Our mission is simple: to deliver exceptional waste and recycling solutions to our customers and communities through a commitment to safety, service, the environment and the growth of our people.

When you join Rumpke, you’ll be part of a team providing essential services to millions of residents, businesses, and neighborhoods. You will enjoy competitive pay and comprehensive benefits, including health, dental, vision, matching 401(k), life insurance, paid vacation, and more.

This is your opportunity to make a difference for you and your family. Come join our team!

The Junior Site Engineer will be an entry-level technical role designed to develop future Site Engineers through comprehensive, hands-on training and mentorship. Over a period of 1–2 years, the Junior Site Engineer will work closely with a committee of experienced professionals to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to succeed in the role of a Site Engineer.

Upon completion of the training period and based on formal performance reviews, the Junior Site Engineer may be promoted to a full Site Engineer position.

As a Junior Site Engineer, you will work under the supervision of the Area Engineer and receive ongoing support from a team of experienced professionals. During your development period, your responsibilities will include:

  • Site Familiarization: Develop a working knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of the assigned site(s), including storm water systems, sanitary sewer lines, discharge points, underground storage tanks (USTs), zoning restrictions, and other key infrastructure features.
  • Permit Understanding & Compliance Support: Gain a functional understanding of site-specific permits (groundwater, surface water, solid waste, and air), and assist with compliance inspections, monitoring, and reporting requirements.
  • Agency Interaction: Begin developing a professional rapport with relevant regulatory agencies through participation in site inspections, correspondence, and meetings under the guidance of the Area Engineer.
  • Capacity & Operations Monitoring: Track and report site capacity metrics (such as air space and throughput) to the Site Manager, while keeping the team informed of key engineering and environmental developments.
  • Issue Identification & Resolution: Help identify environmental issues at the site and assist in the development and implementation of corrective solutions, working closely with the Site Manager and broader site team.
  • Project Assistance & Contract Management: As appropriate, support the preparation of Requests for Proposals (RFPs), assist in bid evaluations, and help manage technical contracts—including budget and schedule tracking—with increasing responsibility over time.
  • Facility Planning & Scheduling: Collaborate with site management to maintain a five-year planning schedule that outlines anticipated expansion, closure, construction, and compliance activities.
  • Compliance Tracking: Review the site's compliance tracker monthly and assist in creating and executing action plans to ensure timely completion of required tasks.
  • Environmental Reporting: Coordinate with site management to manage environmental submittals, aiming for zero administrative violations (on-time and complete submissions).
  • Budget Support: Assist in identifying technical projects for the upcoming fiscal year and contribute to budget and schedule planning, to be reviewed with General Management by January 1.
  • Ongoing Site Communication: Engage in monthly status meetings—virtually or in-person—with Site Managers of smaller facilities (e.g., truck depots) to review environmental and engineering updates.
  • Corrective Measures Participation: Stay informed on the status of environmental corrective measures for assigned sites and contribute to the planning and implementation of these efforts.

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft O365 (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to follow all department rules, procedures, and instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and take responsibility.
  • Ability to take directions from multiple sources and prioritize accordingly.
  • Additional skills may be required to perform task(s) specific to work location, department, or line of business.

Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil, Environmental, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience or studies in Solid Waste are preferred.
  • Experience in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Trimble Office GPS is preferred.
