Job summary

Joulé in Nashua, NH is seeking a Jr. Chemist to perform testing on raw materials, intermediates, and finished products. You will design experiments and evaluate materials for performance, cost, and sustainability, while supporting startup trials and process improvements.

You will work with senior staff on customer visits, learn regulatory requirements, and conduct benchmarking studies. Lab work includes maintaining notebooks and scaling formulations from development to pilot trials.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science, materials science, or related technical field.
• 1-5 years of lab experience, industrial setting preferred (co-ops/internships count).
• Comfortable working in a lab and using common instruments.
• Experience with lab testing/instrumentation (pH meters, DSC, IR, GC, titration, viscometers).
• Experience formulating, mixing, and compounding chemical products.
• Proficiency with electronic notebooks, formulation databases, and R&D software.
• Willingness to learn, trustworthy, personable; good communication skills.
• Ability to engage with clients at trade shows or on-site meetings; strong math.

Responsibilities

• Perform physical, chemical, and performance testing on materials and finished products.
• Design and run experiments using structured test plans and methods.
• Evaluate raw materials for performance, cost, availability, and sustainability.
• Support manufacturing with startup trials, process improvements, and troubleshooting.
• Assist senior staff during customer visits and field evaluations as needed.
• Learn regulations and customer requirements for formulated products under guidance.
• Conduct competitive product evaluations and benchmarking studies.
• Maintain detailed laboratory notebooks with objectives, observations, results, and conclusions.
• Prepare lab batches from 1 L to 5 gallon pilot-scale; scale formulations to production.
• Maintain lab equipment, testing instruments, and chemical inventories.
