  • Enter new cases and update case information in the court data system.
  • Process legal documents such as warrants, subpoenas, summons, and dockets.
  • Perform data entry in the Maryland Judicial Information system for criminal, traffic, and civil cases.
  • Communicate courteously with internal and external customers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Financial Disclosure

As a state employee, you may be required to file an annual Financial Disclosure with the State Ethics Commission. If you are required to file, you will be notified by the Judiciary Human Resources Division and must file within 30 days of employment and no later than April 30th of each subsequent calendar year.

Essential Job Functions

The Judiciary Clerk performs daily case processing duties and responsibilities which include data entry work for case types to include Criminal and Traffic cases for Baltimore City District Court. Provides information to assist the public and other agencies about the status of cases or court procedures. Responds to inquiries via mail, telephone or in person. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet and assist the public and court related personnel, responding to inquiries regarding the proper completion of various court related forms and information regarding court policies and procedures.
  • Provides information about the status of cases or office procedures. Prepares case files and ensures that all necessary documents are completed and accurate in accordance with established court procedures.
  • Enters new cases and updates existing case information into the court's data system.
  • Reviews and processes legal documents such as bench warrants, bond forfeitures, subpoenas, summons, appeals, continuances, commitment papers, and court dockets.
  • Performs data entry in the Maryland Judicial Information system for criminal, traffic, and Civil cases.
  • Communicates courteously and efficiently with internal and external customers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience: One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note
  • A bachelor’s degree may substitute the required work experience.
  • A Paralegal/associate’s degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
  • A Paralegal Certificate May Substitute The Required Work Experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge Of
  • General office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
  • Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Skill In
  • Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently.
  • Typing on a personal computer.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability To
  • Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, cash register, scanner, fax machine, etc.
  • Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
  • Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
  • Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
  • Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
  • Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
Physical Requirements

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
