Job summary

BRMi is seeking an experienced Journeyman Carpenter to support building maintenance, construction, alteration, installation, and repair activities within a commercial facilities environment. This role will coordinate and manage maintenance projects involving internal teams, customers, contractors, and vendors.

The ideal candidate will have 5–10 years of carpentry experience and journeyman-level knowledge of building systems, construction practices, and applicable codes.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of relevant carpentry, construction, or maintenance experience.
• Successful completion of a recognized carpentry apprenticeship program or equivalent training.
• Journeyman-level knowledge of carpentry, building systems, and safety codes.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, determine, and complete building maintenance requirements including construction, alteration, installation, and repair.
• Construct cabinets, shelving, and other carpentry items.
• Assemble, install, modify, and repair furnishings and partitions per specifications.
• Perform preventive maintenance on buildings, furnishings, equipment, and architectural components.
• Manage and coordinate project tasks with contractors and vendors.
• Lead or assist as required on site safety and compliance.

Overview

Responsibilities

• Analyze, determine, and complete building maintenance requirements, including construction, alteration, installation, and repair of buildings, equipment, furnishings, and architectural elements.
• Construct cabinets, shelving, and other specialty carpentry items.
• Assemble, disassemble, install, modify, and repair furnishings and partitions in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
• Perform preventive maintenance on buildings, furnishings, equipment, and related architectural components.
• Inspect building systems and components, including roofing, flooring, finishes, and architectural elements, to identify structural problems, malfunctions, maintenance needs, or required alterations.
• Manage the section's Equipment Maintenance Program, including developing and maintaining preventive maintenance checklists, instructing staff on preventive maintenance procedures, and monitoring compliance.
• Train employees on the proper operation and maintenance of equipment and may serve as a team lead when assigned.
• Research, document, communicate, and ensure compliance with organizational requirements and applicable local, state, and federal building maintenance regulations and codes.
• Serve as project manager for assigned building maintenance and construction projects, coordinating and directing the work of assistants, contractors, and vendors.
• Conduct job and project analyses to determine scope, requirements, resources, schedules, and other project needs.
• Work closely with customers, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders throughout project planning and execution.
• Participate in contractor selection and competitive bidding processes.
• Evaluate contractor proposals based on cost, qualifications, quality, and project requirements and recommend the most qualified contractor.
• Monitor project schedules and coordinate with customers, contractors, and internal teams to support timely completion.
• Review blueprints, plans, specifications, and other technical documentation provided by architects, engineers, contractors, and vendors.
• Inspect work performed by external contractors and vendors to ensure quality and adherence to contract requirements and specifications.
• Provide technical guidance and support to staff in related building trades, including electrical, maintenance, and plumbing services.
• Complete assigned service orders and communicate with customers upon completion of requested work.
• Identify and communicate safety concerns, code compliance issues, and other building maintenance risks to appropriate supervision.
• Provide recommendations regarding the assignment and utilization of apprentices on projects.
• Safely operate and maintain tools and equipment associated with the carpentry trade.
• Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years of relevant carpentry, construction, or commercial building maintenance experience.
• Successful completion of a recognized carpentry apprenticeship program or equivalent formal training and experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and successful performance of carpentry functions at the journeyman level.
• Thorough knowledge of local, state, and national building codes and applicable safety requirements.
• Strong knowledge of carpentry tools, materials, construction methods, trade mathematics, codes, and safety regulations.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, technical documentation, and manufacturer instructions.
• Experience performing commercial building maintenance, construction, alteration, and repair work.
• Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with team members, customers, contractors, and other building trades.
• Effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to coordinate projects and provide direction to contractors, vendors, assistants, and apprentices as needed.
• Ability to lift, move, and set up tools, equipment, materials, and furniture weighing more than 50 pounds.
• Valid driver's license.

Desired

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Extensive commercial electrical maintenance experience.
• Experience coordinating or managing commercial building maintenance or construction projects.
