Job summary

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern for our Edison, New Jersey office. You will assist with ITS design plans and traffic projects, collect data, and support planning activities under senior staff guidance.

Ideal candidates are pursuing a civil engineering degree with 90 hours completed by Summer 2027, and have basic data entry, MS Office, and CAD tool familiarity. This entry-level role offers mentoring and practical field exposure.

Qualifications

• Must have completed 90 hours towards a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship (Summer 2027).
• No prior work experience required for associates or bachelor's degree students entering the program.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic data entry is expected.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparation of engineering plans, drawings, and documentation for ITS design and traffic projects.
• Support investigations, data collection, and planning activities under guidance of experienced staff.
• Prepare technical memoranda, data summaries, and sections of reports with mentorship.
• Observe construction activities and review project documentation, tracking progress and QA/QC under supervision.
• Research design alternatives, site conditions, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Assist with preliminary estimates for labor, materials, and project costs.
• Participate in quality control by checking calculations and drawings with senior staff.
• Attend field visits and site observations to gain practical experience in transportation infrastructure.

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Edison, New Jersey office.

Your role

• Assist with the preparation of engineering plans, drawings, and supporting documentation related to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design and traffic engineering projects.
• Support engineering investigations, data collection efforts, and planning activities for projects with clearly defined objectives under the guidance of experienced team members.
• Assist in preparing technical memoranda, data summaries, and sections of engineering reports while developing technical writing skills through mentorship and review.
• Observe and support construction engineering activities, including reviewing project documentation, tracking construction progress, and learning quality assurance and quality control processes under the supervision of experienced engineers.
• Research and compile information related to design alternatives, site conditions, applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Assist with the preliminary estimates for labor, materials, and project costs.
• Participate in quality control activities by checking calculations, verifying data, and drawings with guidance from senior staff.
• Participate in field visits and site observations to gain practical experience with transportation infrastructure design and construction activities.

About you

• EXPERIENCE: No experience is generally required if accepted into an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program in a related technical field.
• EDUCATION: Must have completed 90 hours towards a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship (Summer 2027).
• SPECIAL SKILLS:
  • Basic computer skills required to enter data into spreadsheets or databases.
  • Math skills to perform simple calculations; willingness to learn.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer, or MicroStation (preferred)

Additional information

Expected compensation range is between $25 - $31 hourly depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
