City of Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) seeks a manager of traffic technology and engineering to oversee active traffic management and ITS projects. You will coordinate signal timings, supervise engineers, and ensure safe flow for Chicago streets daily.

The role involves remote signal operation, real-time data monitoring, and liaison with maintenance crews and city departments. A PE license is required and IL registration must be obtained.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering plus five (5) years of work experience in planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects, with three (3) years in a supervisory role.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Engineering plus four (4) years of work experience in planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects, with three (3) years in a supervisory role.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) is required. Candidates with R.P.E. in other states may apply, but must obtain Illinois registration at employment.
  • Some positions may require a valid State of Illinois driver’s license.

  • Facilitates remote operation of traffic signals and intelligent transportation system field devices.
  • Monitors real-time data received from the field and third-party sources and oversee the systems hosting transportation data and CDOT's Traffic Management Center.
  • Identifies areas of concern for traffic safety and traffic flow and coordinate implementation of counter measures.
  • Additional duties may be required for this position.

Job description

As the manager of traffic technology and engineering, the positions will oversee and implement active traffic management, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and related projects. This position plays a critical role in managing the safe and efficient flow of over a million vehicles and pedestrians on Chicago streets every day.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, plus five (5) years of work experience in the planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree or higher in Engineering, plus four (4) years of work experience in the planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position
  • Depending upon department assignment, field of engineering may vary.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) is required. Candidates with a Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) in other states may apply, but at the time of employment, positions must have obtained Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) in the State of Illinois.
  • Some positions may require a valid State of Illinois driver’s license.
