The University of Maryland in College Park seeks a Junior IT Network Engineer to implement, monitor, and support both wired and wireless campus networks. You will assist faculty, staff, and students with edge connectivity and related services, including jack activations and AP troubleshooting.
The role requires collaboration with the campus NOC, experience with network management tools, and a valid driver’s license. Evening/weekend shifts may be required and telework is limited.
This position is available within the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT).
This position is responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and support of the University of Maryland wired and wireless networks. It provides support to UMD Faculty, Staff, and Students for connection to the edge network, including but not limited to providing assistance for jack activations, copper and optical connections, wired switch and wireless AP troubleshooting, DHCP and DNS services, VPN troubleshooting, and network infrastructure deployment and replacement.
The campus network is a converged network that requires disciplined support and a strong propensity towards IT project management. A good understanding of campus Network Operations Center (NOC) functions along with an expertise to utilize network management systems is critical. This position requires a valid driver's license.
This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services.
May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, or different shifts for extended periods.
Requirement to perform “on-call” duties required to maintain various networks. Some stress factors may be involved due to the nature of the operation and complexity of the duties. This job requires the ability to install networking equipment that includes climbing ladders, lifting network equipment (40lbs), working with hand tools, and accessing mechanical rooms. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a vehicle.
Valid Driver’s License is required to operate a state vehicle.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

This position may be eligible for some telework, but that will be dependent on projects and needs of the project/department. There will be a regular in-office requirement.
Please note that all positions within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) have an in person component with expected time in our College Park, MD location per week. Telework is not a guaranteed work arrangement.
