University of Maryland, College Park is hiring for a mid‑level IT Network Engineer in the Division of Information Technology. The role focuses on planning, designing, and implementing wired and wireless infrastructure, plus lifecycle management of network devices and services.
You will also document designs, train colleagues, and participate in on‑call rotations, with some after‑hours work expected. A bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience are required.
This position is available within the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT). This mid-level position reports to the Assistant Director, Network Engineering, within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) at the University of Maryland, College Park, and performs in several key areas:
This position is considered an essential position and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergencies to help maintain continuity of University services.
May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, or different shifts for extended periods.
Predominantly operates in an office environment, though significant periods of time may be spent in the computer room and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of heavy communications equipment.

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Three (3) years of professional network design, research, implementation, and escalation support experience.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
Education: Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline is highly desired.
Experience: Hands‑on experience in a large‑scale IT development and operations environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge Hands‑on knowledge of Aruba, Cisco routers, and switches. Hands‑on knowledge of Palo Alto Firewalls Hands‑on knowledge of A10 load balancers Hands‑on knowledge of HPE Aruba wireless access points, controllers, and conductors. Hands‑on knowledge of network management and monitoring tools, such as PRTG, Nagios, and Grafana. Hands‑on knowledge of and ability to work with Infoblox DDI Hands‑on understanding of basic software development principles and network automation. Hands‑on knowledge of developing network automation code in Python and Ansible, using best practices for software development and version control. Knowledge of Server Operating Systems, including: Windows, UNIX (Linux/FreeBSD). Understanding of databases and database management systems. (SQL, Oracle). Skills Advanced-level understanding of IP routing, Ethernet switching, wireless, IP multicast routing, VOIP, QoS, network management principles, firewalls, VPNs, network security principles, network capacity planning and management. In-depth technical and “hands‑on” knowledge of protocols and standards: Ethernet, TCP/IP, 802.1x, Wi‑Fi standards (802.11 family), NAC, OSPF, BGP and BGP EVPN, IPSec, VxLAN / EVPN, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, GRE, IPAM and NTP. Hands‑on experience with enterprise-level routers, switches, firewalls, and network load balancers. Strong ability to troubleshoot configuration-level and, architecture-level scenarios across multiple network devices and platforms. Strong written and oral communication skills. Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspace. Abilities: Ability to develop network automation code in Python. Ability to effectively manage workload and deliver assignments on time. Scaling designs to 50,000-user enterprise networks in all networking and telecommunications areas. Ability to work under pressure and with very short timelines. Ability to manage multiple distinct tasks and priorities daily Additional Information: Please note that all positions within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) have an in person component with expected time in our College Park, MD location per week. Telework is not a guaranteed work arrangement. Visa Sponsorship Information: DIT will not sponsor the successful candidate for work authorization in the United States now or in the future. F1 STEM OPT support is not available for this position. Remote Work: This position may be eligible for some telework, but that will be dependent on projects and needs of the project/department.
