Job summary

The University of Maryland, College Park, Division of Information Technology (DIT) seeks a mid‑level Network Engineer to design, implement, and support wired and wireless networks across the campus. You will collaborate on lifecycle management of network devices, document designs and runbooks, and present technical topics to diverse audiences while mentoring colleagues.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Three (3) years of professional network design, research, implementation, and escalation support experience.

Hands-on experience in a large-scale IT development/operations environment and in higher education is desirable.

Job Description Summary

This position is available within the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT).

This mid-level position reports to the Assistant Director, Network Engineering, within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) at the University of Maryland, College Park, and performs in several key areas:

In collaboration with others, plan, design, and implement wired and wireless network infrastructure improvements and new capabilities. This may include stakeholder meetings, requirements identification, team formation and teamwork as appropriate, and coordination of the workstreams.
In collaboration with others, design, develop, and support the wired and wireless network infrastructure. This may involve entire life cycle management and support of network entities such as copper and fiber infrastructure, routers and switches, traffic shapers, VPN systems, firewalls, IPS systems, load balancers, VoIP infrastructure, wireless infrastructure, and monitoring and alerting infrastructure.
In collaboration with others, ensure that network documentation, including design documents, purpose statements, stakeholder requirements, test and support plans, as‑built diagrams and specifications, as well as run books, are up‑to‑date.
Present and communicate technical design and training topics to medium‑sized audiences of mixed levels of technical savvy. Mentor DIT colleagues as the need comes up.
Participate in the on‑call rotation and provide some support outside of business hours.

This position is considered an essential position and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergencies to help maintain continuity of University services.

May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, or different shifts for extended periods.

Physical Demands: Predominantly operates in an office environment, though significant periods of time may be spent in the computer room and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of heavy communications equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Three (3) years of professional network design, research, implementation, and escalation support experience.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

Knowledge of core networking design and implementation over the WAN.
Knowledge of scalable networks.

Preferences

Education

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline is highly desired.

Experience

Hands‑on experience in a large‑scale IT development and operations environment.
Hands‑on experience in a large‑scale higher education environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Hands‑on knowledge of Aruba, Cisco routers, and switches.
Hands‑on knowledge of Palo Alto Firewalls
Hands‑on knowledge of A10 load balancers
Hands‑on knowledge of HPE Aruba wireless access points, controllers, and conductors.
Hands‑on knowledge of network management and monitoring tools, such as PRTG, Nagios, and Grafana.
Hands‑on knowledge of and ability to work with Infoblox DDI
Hands‑on understanding of basic software development principles and network automation.
Hands‑on knowledge of developing network automation code in Python and Ansible, using best practices for software development and version control.
Knowledge of Server Operating Systems, including: Windows, UNIX (Linux/FreeBSD).
Understanding of databases and database management systems. (SQL, Oracle).

Skills

Advanced‑level understanding of IP routing, Ethernet switching, wireless, IP multicast routing, VOIP, QoS, network management principles, firewalls, VPNs, network security principles, network capacity planning and management.
In‑depth technical and “hands‑on” knowledge of protocols and standards: Ethernet, TCP/IP, 802.1x, Wi‑Fi standards (802.11 family), NAC, OSPF, BGP and BGP EVPN, IPSec, VxLAN / EVPN, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, GRE, IPAM and NTP.
Hands‑on experience with enterprise‑level routers, switches, firewalls, and network load balancers.
Strong ability to troubleshoot configuration‑level and, architecture‑level scenarios across multiple network devices and platforms.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspace.

Abilities

Ability to develop network automation code in Python.
Ability to effectively manage workload and deliver assignments on time.
Scaling designs to 50,000‑user enterprise networks in all networking and telecommunications areas.
Ability to work under pressure and with very short timelines.ia
Ability to manage multiple distinct tasks and priorities daily.
Ability to work under pressure.

Additional Information

Please note that all positions within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) have an in‑person component with expected time in our College Park, MD location per week. Telework is not a guaranteed work arrangement.

Remote Work
