Overview of Role:
- The client is transitioning away from a current 3rd party and bringing associated tasks in-house. This includes managing tasks like VPN connections, help desk support, and device management.
- The goal is to hire an IT Generalist to provide onsite support, manage 3rd-party relationships, 2. oversee network operations, and handle end-user support tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Network Administration:
- Manage VPN tunnels and connections (e.g., separating VPN that currently goes through the 3rd party).
- Collaborate with the current IT staff and third parties for networking tasks.
- Navigate and interpret network topology (e.g., reviewing network closets).
- Maintain and monitor networking devices, including firewalls (Cisco for data, Fortinet for firewalls).
- Handle Ethernet and Wi-Fi troubleshooting (e.g., Aruba devices, licensing upkeep).
- End-User and Help Desk Support:
- Work on help desk tickets for a large campus with varied needs across neighborhoods.
- Address new user setups, remote access, and connectivity issues.
- Provide great customer service and assist local resources with SLA adherence.
- Serve as a liaison between onsite resources and 3rd-party ticket routing systems.
- Strategic IT Tasks:
- Evaluate hardware lifecycle: Identify and budget for equipment upgrades or replacements.
- Make recommendations on software solutions by assessing capabilities, risks, and costs.
- Collaborate with leadership to ensure IT resources align with organizational goals.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
- Mid-level networking knowledge (e.g., VPN, Wi-Fi, Ethernet).
- Familiarity with firewalls, routing interfaces, and basic troubleshooting (not programming routers).
- Strong understanding of basic network topology.
- Basic knowledge of Cisco, Fortinet, and Aruba device ecosystems.
Soft Skills:
- Ability to work well with others and maintain a “no-ego” approach.
- Flexibility to provide after-hours or weekend maintenance as needed.
- Strong customer service orientation and a collaborative mindset.
General Requirements:
- IT generalist-level expertise in end-user support and network administration.
- Understanding of SLA adherence, contracts, and vendor management.
- Comfortable managing resources rather than implementing complex solutions.
Additional Information:
- The position involves rolling two companies into one IT system; the second company is small, with 25 users.
- Interviews can occur onsite if possible or after standard working hours.
- Large campus (300+ acres) and even with driving to the different neighborhoods there can be a fair amount of walking. The candidate will also need to be hands on with the ability to lift up to 50lbs. In short, this position requires a candidate who is capable of being very active.
- Knowledgeable with regards to software solutions is a must. We will need the candidate to make recommendations on what software we need and which option is best when considering the capabilities, risks and costs.
- Duties would include Helpdesk support, New User setup. Experience with VPN's and Fortinet/Cisco firewalls a plus.
- This person would need good people skills and good organizational skills.
- This role will require someone laid back, collaborative, and reliable, who can adapt to the organization's needs, take ownership of IT processes, and maintain a straightforward network.
