Job summary

OpenAI is seeking an Accounting Lead, Hardware in San Francisco to build scalable inventory and supply chain accounting capabilities. You will partner with Finance, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Systems teams to implement robust processes and reporting for hardware products and robotics ventures.

The role emphasizes strategic thinking with hands-on execution, ownership of policies and controls, and collaboration with senior leadership to support rapid growth and product launches.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with ownership of close processes or operational accounting.
• Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and ability to research unfamiliar topics.
• Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new business models and take ownership of unfamiliar accounting areas.
• Experience building or improving accounting processes, reconciliations, controls, and reporting.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and cross‑functional partnership skills.
• Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and execute effectively in Ambiguous, fast‑moving environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead inventory and supply chain accounting across consumer hardware and robotics programs, including valuation, variances, reserves, and close processes.
• Partner with Supply Chain, Operations, and Strategic Finance for BOM accuracy and margin analysis.
• Develop scalable accounting processes for prototyping, NPI, engineering builds, and mass production.
• Own inventory‑related policies and controls, including capitalization, overhead allocation, and LCNRV/NRV assessments.
• Serve as a finance lead for Oracle Fusion manufacturing costing and inventory implementations, enhancements, and process optimization.
• Partner with Systems and Operations to design scalable finance processes, controls, reporting structures, and workflows.
• Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual cost accounting close activities and improve reconciliations and reporting.
• Partner on margin reporting, inventory analytics, and budget versus actual analysis.
• Establish SOX‑ready controls and drive continuous improvement across close and reporting processes.
• Act as a strategic partner to Operations, Supply Chain, Procurement, and Program Management teams.
