Job Description

Summary: Joe V's Smart Shop is a Division of H-E-B, the largest independent food retailer in Texas. Joe V's operates stores throughout Houston, Texas. As a Smart Shop Exempt Department Manager, you will oversee department operations which could include perishable departments, center store, Inventory Flow, Receiving, and Shelf Edge, with a specific emphasis in your area of expertise (i.e., produce, market, front end).

Responsibilities:

1. Management: Majority of the time spent using independent judgment in making employment-related and business decisions, including product and department-related strategies, hiring, promoting, disciplining, suspending, discharging, rewarding, or resolving Partner-related matters.
2. Manages people, staffing, and training for area of focus.
3. Review and analyze financial and performance reports, identifying and following up on opportunities/issues.
4. Manages Operational Review Team (ORT) related audits and findings.
5. Conducts detailed store and/or department walks.
6. Maintains work instructions for area of focus.
7. Monitors and reports on inventory estimates and Direct Store Delivery (DSD) accounting.
8. Utilizes ownership mentality in your department and total store.
9. Creates weekly schedules to meet the needs of the business.
10. Operates in a cross-functional environment.
11. Ensures proper order and inventory levels within your department.
12. Orders product and performs quality control.
13. Participates in the store leadership team to ensure coordination, integration, and alignment of total store plans.
14. Supports Leadership and Department teams with a total store mindset.

Sales / Strategy:

1. Manages operations in area of focus; monitors craftsmanship, shrink, safety, and quality assurance.
2. Creates actionable plans and follows up on 'What Ifs.'
3. Serves as the Brand Promise Champion.

Customer Service:

1. Focuses on Partner/customer relationships, collaboration, communication, and education.
2. Models/cultivates superior customer service across store departments.
3. Identifies and develops future talent.
4. Models/promotes active engagement with the Community.

Area of Focus / Department:

1. Inventory Flow: Manages and responsible for center store inventory workflow, including receiving and shelf edge.
2. Front End: Manages and responsible for overall front end operations.
3. Market: Manages and responsible for overall meat market operations.
4. Produce / Bakery: Manages and responsible for overall produce and bakery operations.
5. Floor (total store): Ensures a proper store close, evening replenishment, and appropriate store conditions are maintained.

What is your background?

1. Completion of H-E-B's or JVSS's Management Training Program.
2. Operational/Retail Management experience.
3. Leadership experience in a complex environment with multiple direct reports.
4. Thorough understanding of retail accounting.
5. Experience in ordering, inventory maintenance, and shrink control.
6. Leadership skills (people leadership, ownership mentality, know the business, strategic planner, adaptable).
7. Interpersonal skills.
8. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including night shifts.

What training is required?

Successful completion of JVSS or H-E-B School of Retail Management (SORM).
