Essential Job Functions

This position serves as a Spanish Language Court Interpreter in the courtroom, assisting interested parties as deemed necessary by the presiding judge in Baltimore City Circuit Court. Provides oral interpretation and sight translation for spoken communication and court-related documents.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Interpret during Criminal court procedures: trials, pleas, Preliminary Inquiries, Violation of Probation, Domestic Violence hearings, Bond hearings, serious and minor traffic hearings, etc.

  • Interpret during Civil court procedures: Protective order hearings, Civil motions, tort trials, Landlord‑Tenant hearings, municipal infractions, large and small claims.

  • Participate in conversations and conferences outside the courtroom for the state's attorney, public defender, or counsel in plea negotiations; court‑ordered mediations; debt collection agreements; oral exams; etc.

  • Translate documents for use in the courthouse at the judge's request, e.g., Advice of Rights, Protective Order announcements, etc.; translate petitions or other documents from individuals not represented by counsel; assist pro‑se litigants with forms; assist bailiffs giving instructions in the courtrooms.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Education: High School diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Experience: One (1) year of experience providing interpreting services as a freelance or court interpreter.

  • Certification: Maryland State Certification or Membership in the Council for Language Access or Federal Certification as a Spanish Court Interpreter.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Native or near‑native knowledge of English and Spanish with correct grammar, idioms, and pronunciation.

  • Knowledge of legal terminology and the legal process.

  • Knowledge of the Maryland Judicial System.

  • Knowledge and compliance with the Code of Professional Conduct for Court Interpreters.

  • Skill in simultaneous and consecutive modes, sight translation of varying difficulty and legal terminology, and team interpretation.

  • Ability to remain poised in stressful and pressured situations.

  • Ability to provide consistent, professional, and courteous service.

  • Ability to use tact when responding to staff, public officials, and the public.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to operate a personal computer and use Microsoft Office and data‑entry functions.

  • Ability to prioritize work assignments.


Physical Requirements

Sedentary work; may require lifting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible force frequently; walking and standing only occasionally.


Equipment, Machinery, and Tools

Personal computer, copier, scanner, interpreter equipment.


Software and Computer Skills

Microsoft Office; data entry; personal computer usage to enter and review information.

This is an At‑Will position and serves at the pleasure of the Maryland Judiciary and assigned court location(s). Parking is included for this position.
