Job summary

Maryland Judiciary seeks a Judiciary Clerk in the Civil division to handle civil filings, pleadings, and forms in Baltimore County Circuit Court. The role includes counter and telephone assistance, document processing, and docketing duties with attention to court procedures.

  • Handle landlord-tenant filings and perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

The Judiciary Clerk is an entry-level clerical position performing case processing duties and responsibilities to include processing all pleadings, forms, and orders pertaining to civil cases in Baltimore County Circuit Court. Assisting the public and attorneys at the counter and via telephone by providing information regarding court policies and procedures and assisting with proper completion of various court related forms.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Opens and accepts civil filings through file and serve that are civil pretrial and post judgment related. This includes but not limited to sending back deficient filings, tasking work to appropriate queues, and editing documents received.
  • Processes all motions and filings and ensures all necessary documents are complete and accurate in accordance with established court procedures. Enter service, compose civil dockets and affidavit judgments. Process all other requests that a pretrial and post judgment related
  • Assists the public, attorneys, and court personnel in person or on the phone responding to inquiries regarding the proper completion of various court related forms and provides information regarding court policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and processes all other civil documents. Performs other essential functions as required and sort, file, and scan various documents and files in accordance with MDEC procedures.
  • Receives and process all landlord tenant filings that are filed in person and through File and Serve.
  • All other duties assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education

High school diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience

One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal Certificate May Substitute The Required Work Experience.

Knowledge Of
  • General office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary.
  • Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Ability To
  • Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
  • Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
  • Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.
  • Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
  • Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Exercise independent judgement in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.
  • Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, database software, copier/fax machine, computerized cash register, etc.
Physical Requirements

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
