Join to apply for the Integration & Test Engineer (Optical) role at SpaceX

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

INTEGRATION & TEST ENGINEER (OPTICAL)

As an Optical Integration & Test Engineer on the Space Lasers team, you will be responsible for developing and operating complex test equipment to validate the Space Lasers systems. This will include qualifying and acceptance testing of optical systems, high-precision actuators, and integrated system-level testing. On a daily basis, you can expect to be driving the business outcome of a project that will directly tie into the success of the Space Lasers program. Depending on the status of a project this could entail test design, operation, data processing, and or root cause investigative work. You will work with responsible engineers, software engineers, and production team members to achieve positive outcomes for the space lasers team.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to understand and drive requirements for production and development testing of highly complex spaceflight hardware
  • Apply optics and photonics knowledge to laser test system development, including design, analysis, and validation
  • Evaluate proposed designs for manufacturability and manage integration build flow and test operations
  • Drive validation testing, including performance characterization, lot acceptance testing, and reliability testing of flight hardware
  • Evaluate non-conformances to determine root cause and create actionable items and system improvements

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physics or an engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of hands-on laboratory or work experience in optics, photonics, laser technology, or testing (university lab, student project, or internship experience qualifies)
  • 1+ years of experience in a computer programming language (e.g. C++, LabVIEW, and/or Python)

Preferred Skills And Experience

  • Master's degree or PhD in physics oran engineering discipline
  • Experience working in an optical laboratory or production setting requiring hands-on work, attention to detail, and high regard for safety
  • Proficiency with optical analysis tools such as Zemax
  • Knowledge of and experience in lasers, photodiodes, fiber optics, optics testing/troubleshooting techniques, and signal integrity principles
  • Experience with optical test equipment (power meters, interferometers, spectrum analyzers etc.)
  • Experience with integration and testing of electrical or avionics systems
  • Documentation and configuration management experience
  • Experience writing test plans, and procedures and providing go/no-go judgment and rationale
  • Demonstrated engineering intuition, critical thinking, and comfort with ambiguity
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (NX preferred)
  • Experience working effectively across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Additional Requirements

  • Some travel to our launch sites may be required as needed, up to 10%
  • Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed

Compensation And Benefits
