Job Description

Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. He/she will be responsible for quality instruction and for effective participation and interest in the total affairs of the college.

Under general supervision, this individual will prepare and teach automotive courses designed for career technical programs. The faculty member must be able to instruct a wide variety of topics within the curriculum in a laboratory environment and may be required to teach day, evening and/or weekend hours.

Duties/Functions

Teaching

• Develop learner-centered lesson plans.
• Employ teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles.
• Incorporate, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments.
• Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population.
• Prepare, distribute and utilize instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate.
• Conduct appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs/general education as appropriate.

Professional Development

• Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency in field; maintain current credentials or licenses as required by program or accreditation.
• Participate in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies.

Administration

• Maintain classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep of assigned equipment.
• Provide security of facilities, equipment and instructional materials and maintain safe working conditions.
• Maintain student records (e.g., grades and attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using a variety of technology-based programs (e.g., Colleague, WebAdvisor, Moodle).
• Comply with all applicable college, state and federal rules and regulations.

Student Support

• Conduct recruiting activities.
• Promote retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success.
• Refer students to campus and community resources when appropriate.

Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem-solving, responsibility and teamwork.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

• Maintain student records.
• Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education Required

• Associate degree in Automotive Technology.
• ASE Certification in Electrical.
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Education Preferred

• Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology or related field of study.
• ASE Master Certification.
• Ford technician certification(s). (Ford ASSET Program)

Experience Required

• 3 years of relevant industry experience in an automotive repair facility; experience and proficiency with automotive testing and diagnostic equipment.
• Teaching and/or industry training experience.

Experience Preferred

• More than 3 years of relevant industry experience in an automotive repair facility.
• Teaching experience in a post-secondary automotive technology program.
• Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.

Physical Demands

1. May include teaching day and evening and/or weekend hours.

   • Stand extensive periods of time (up to 6 hours)
   • Lab instruction may require setting up demonstrations and moving large, bulky training simulators, engines, transmissions, and other heavy components in advance of class.
   • Student projects may have to be supervised in confined areas underneath cars and trucks and within the engine compartment of cars and small-to-medium trucks forklift.
   • Conduct of labs requires supervision of up to 20 students in a large industrial shop and/or specialized labs as they perform required projects.
   • May be exposed to hazardous materials and be required to demonstrate their safe handling, in the conduct of classes.
   • Certain labs also require the use of both flammable and inert gases, as well as the use of high pressure hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
