Job summary

Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is seeking an instructor for Fire Occupational Extension to deliver quality instruction and coordinate training programs. Qualifications

  • North Carolina NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor II certification is required.
  • North Carolina NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II Qualified Instructor status.
  • Valid NC Driver’s License.
  • Experience delivering classroom and hands-on instruction in fire service.
  • Associate degree in Fire Science or related field or ability to obtain within 2 years.

Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College areresponsible for supporting student success by creating an effectivelearning environment, responding to student needs, managinginstructional activities, developing fire service-related courses,modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism,developing cooperative work relationships with faculty and staff,supporting college administrative requirements, and maintainingcompetency in their instructional field.


The Fire Occupational Extension (OE) Instructor is responsible for delivering quality instruction and supporting the coordination andimplementation of fire and emergency services training programs. This includes course instruction, assisting with day-to-dayoperations, supporting course scheduling, and ensuring training isdelivered in accordance with established state standards andprogram expectations.


The Fire OE Instructor works in coordination with the Fire AcademyCoordinator to align schedules, instructor assignments, facilityuse, and equipment needs to ensure efficient training delivery and to prevent conflicts related to shared resources.


This role requires maintaining an active instructional presence inboth classroom and hands-on training environments, ensuring thatinstruction reflects current fire service practices and standards. The Instructor is expected to maintain professionalism, supportstudent development, and contribute to a structured and disciplinedtraining environment.


The Fire OE Instructor supports program functions by providingcustomer service, assisting with data tracking, and maintainingaccurate course and student documentation. The position alsosupports compliance with applicable college requirements and statefire service training standards. The Fire OE Instructor contributes to the overall success of theprogram through active participation in training operations andcollaboration with faculty, staff, and partner agencies. This position reports directly to the Fire Occupational ExtensionProgram Director.


Education Required


  • North Carolina NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor II certification

  • North Carolina NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II QualifiedInstructor status

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

  • Demonstrated fire service experience with the ability todeliver both classroom and hands-on instruction

  • Associate degree in Fire Science or a closely related fieldfrom a regionally accredited institution, or the ability to obtainwithin two (2) years of employment


Education Preferred


  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire ServicesAdministration, or a closely related field from a regionallyaccredited institution

  • North Carolina NFPA 1403 Live Fire Qualified Instructor

  • North Carolina NFPA 1006 Technical Rescue – Rope RescueQualified Instructor

  • North Carolina NFPA 1006 Technical Rescue – Passenger and HeavyVehicle Rescue Qualified Instructor


Experience Required


  • Five years of relevant or closely related field experience inFire Service Management

  • Three years of Firefighter training/teaching experience basedon regulatory requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of teaching credentials for coursesassigned is required.


Experience Preferred


  • Greater than five years of relevant or closely related fieldexperience in Fire Service Management

  • Greater than three years of Firefighter training/teachingexperience based on regulatory requirements

  • Community College teaching or training experiencepreferred

  • Experience with the assessment of student learningoutcomes
