Job summary

Tidewater Community College is seeking a part-time Installation and Repair Technician to support on-site telecommunications and microcomputer devices across multiple campuses. The IRT will perform installation, testing, and repair to support staff, faculty, and students, reporting to the Supervisor of Desktop Services.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of personal computers, operating systems, peripheral devices, and desktop applications (Apple OS, Windows 10, Office).
  • Basic knowledge of LAN/WAN networks including TCP/IP and related protocols.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair desktops and peripherals; strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain security and confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Assist in desktop standardization and performance.
  • Use diagnostic and data recovery software to install, configure common software and OS (Windows 10 and Apple).
  • Setup and maintain network interface systems (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet).
  • Test wiring, IP telephone equipment and peripherals for voice, data, video services.
  • Coordinate work with customers; document; communicate with Telecom/Network/Support teams.

Job Description:

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Job Description Summary:

The part-time Installation and Repair Technician (IRT) reports directly to the Supervisor of Desktop Services. Performs on-site and in-shop inspection, installation, testing, and repair of telecommunications and microcomputer devices and peripheral equipment in support of a multi-vendor, multi-protocol, voice, video, and data network. IRT’s provide professional, courteous, and timely end user support to the college’s staff, faculty, and students.

This position has been designated an essential position. The employee filling this position may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position in the event of a college/campus closure due to weather or other emergent condition(s).

Functional Responsibilities:
  • The part-time IRT is accountable for maintaining the security and confidentiality of any proprietary or sensitive information or data in any medium regarding the college or its students, faculty, or staff.
  • Assists in ensuring desktop standardization, and performance.
  • Utilizes diagnostic and data recovery software to install, setup, and configure common application software packages and operating systems (i.e. Microsoft Windows 10 and Apple).
  • Assists in performing setup and maintenance of network interface systems (i.e. Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, etc.).
  • Tests wiring, IP telephone equipment and peripherals for switched and non-switched services (voice, data, and video).
  • Duties include, but are not limited to, interpretation of written requests; coordination of work with customers; installation or repair of requested services; documentation; interaction/communications with Telecom, Network, and Support Specialists regarding such services
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of personal computers, operating systems, peripheral devices, and desktop computer applications, including Apple OS, Windows 10, and Microsoft Office 2016/2019.
  • Basic knowledge of local area networks, including Telecommunications Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and its application in a large WAN/LAN environment.
  • Basic knowledge of Anti Virus and Network Security Scanning Software.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computers, operating systems, and peripherals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills sufficient to interact with a variety of end users and other technical staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of a work assignment and to participate as a member of a cross-departmental project team.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet inflexible deadlines, deal with difficult situations while maintaining composure, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting day-to-day needs.
  • Ability to work independently or as a member of a team without direct supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of the concepts of Voice Over IP for Ethernet networks.
