Job summary

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads for 50 years, providing higher education and workforce services across multiple campuses. The IT/AV technician role focuses on on-site installation, testing, and repair of devices, delivering timely support to staff and students in a multi-vendor environment.

You will ensure desktop standardization, perform diagnostics, and collaborate with Telecom, Network, and Support Specialists while safeguarding sensitive information.

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of personal computers, operating systems, peripheral devices, and desktop applications.
  • Knowledge of local area networks, including TCP/IP and security policies for a large WAN/LAN environment.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computers, operating systems, and peripherals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with end users and technical staff.
  • A+ certification or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work under pressure; meet inflexible deadlines and manage multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Campus Supervisor. Performs on-site and in-shop inspection, installation, testing, and repair of Audio Visual and microcomputer devices and related equipment.
  • Provides first-level end-user support to staff, faculty, and students while maintaining security and confidentiality of data.
  • Coordinates work with Telecom, Network, and Support Specialists and documents all service activities.

Job Description

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College ( TCC ) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC . TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Reports directly to the Campus Supervisor. Performs on-site and in-shop inspection, installation, testing, and repair of Audio Visual and microcomputer devices and peripheral equipment in support of a multi-vendor, multi-protocol, voice, video, and data network. Provides professional, courteous, and timely end user support to the college’s staff, faculty, and students. Accountable for maintaining the security and confidentiality of any proprietary or sensitive information or data in any medium regarding the college or its students, faculty, or staff. Accessing or disclosing such information or data must be deemed necessary for the performance of one’s job responsibilities and must be authorized by the employee’s supervisor. Assists in ensuring desktop standardization, and performance. Utilizes diagnostic and data recovery software to install, setup, and configure common application software packages and operating systems (i.e. Microsoft Windows 10 and Macintosh). Assists in performing setup and maintenance of network interface systems (i.e. Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, etc.). Tests wiring, IP telephone equipment and peripherals for switched and non-switched services (voice, data, and video). Install and test Audio Visual Equipment (Control Systems, Amps, TVs, cameras, Microphones). Duties include, but are not limited to, interpretation of written requests; coordination of work with customers; installation or repair of requested services; documentation; interaction/communications with Telecom, Network, and Support Specialists regarding such services, providing first level customer support, and completion of appropriate paperwork.

This position has been designated an essential position. The employee filling this position may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position in the event of a college/campus closure due to weather or other emergent condition(s).

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of personal computers, operating systems, peripheral devices, and desktop computer applications, including latest Apple OS/ IOS , Windows, and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of local area networks, including Telecommunications Protocol/Internet Protocol ( TCP /IP) and its application in a large WAN / LAN environment.
  • Knowledge of Anti-Virus and Network Security Scanning Software, as well as security policies and procedures for a large WAN / LAN environment.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computers, operating systems, and peripherals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills sufficient to interact with a variety of end users and other technical staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of a work assignment and to participate as a member of a cross-departmental project team.
  • Ability to work under pressure; meet inflexible deadlines; deal with difficult situations while maintaining composure, handle multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting day-to-day need.
  • Ability to install, configure, and support electronic messaging applications and clients for a large campus.
  • Ability to work independently or as a member of a team without direct supervision.
  • Working knowledge of the concepts of Voice Over IP for Ethernet networks.
  • Experience in installing, troubleshooting, and repairing IBM compatible computer equipment, Operating systems and peripheral devices.
  • A+ certification or equivalent experience.

Additional Considerations

  • Ability to configure and employ LAN management, performance, and evaluation tools such as SCCM to evaluate network performance in a complex, multi-campus WAN / LAN environment.
  • Ability to install, configure, and troubleshoot Audio Visual Equipment (Control Systems, TVs, Cameras, Microphones, Amps, and associated wiring) in a conference room and classroom environment.
  • Knowledge of various types of Audio Visual (Crestron, Extron, TV transmission Systems, Web Camera Systems) equipment utilized in classroom and to display student information.
  • Microsoft Certified Professional or equivalent experience.
