Job Summary:

Safely and accurately perform venipunctures, arterial, and capillary specimen collections as requested in adults, children, and infants. Include interpretation of physician orders and ensure all requests are accurately and completely processed in the information system. Complete all required compliance processes.

Job Description:

3rd Shift 20 Hrs per Week E/O Weekend

Job Duties:

  • Greet patients using the AIDET (PHLEBOT) model, giving instructions and directions as necessary to provide quality patient experiences.
  • Evaluate physician orders for type of specimens, time of draw, and any specific specimen handling requirements.
  • Use work lists to organize draws.
  • Use hospital and laboratory computer systems to obtain information and clarify requests.
  • Use a PDA for patient identification, various printers, and phones to communicate with other departmental staff, obtain labels, and organize work.
  • Communicate with physician offices to obtain diagnosis coding information and do problem solving.
  • Communicate with pharmacy and other patient care staff to ensure proper, timely collection of various medication levels and tolerance tests.
  • Safely collect quality samples according to laboratory policies and procedures for the accurate and timely completion of testing.
  • Use a variety of collection devices/sharps to obtain specimens.
  • Collect culture specimens as required to meet quality goals.
  • Handle a variety of body fluids to obtain and process specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly environment by cleaning, organizing, rotating, and stocking phlebotomy work areas, carts, OP draw sites, and inpatient units.
  • Have knowledge of collection and ordering requirements for reference labs and other specialty testing labs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Laboratory Compliance policies and procedures and internal mandatory computer-based learning modules.
  • Collect specimens at other healthcare facilities as needed and cover at other laboratory sites across the system as necessary, utilizing courier services and meeting safe driver standards.
  • Attend in-services and continuing education seminars for personal and professional growth.
  • Enhance professional growth and development of self, department staff, hospital personnel, community, and students through continuing education and training.
  • Implement ICARE principles to promote quality patient care and a productive working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education, Credentials, Licenses:

High School graduate or GED

Valid Driver License/Meet Medical Centers Insurance requirements for applicable locations (necessary to work at the Edgewood facility due to the need for phlebotomists to cover nursing home draws and drive a laboratory vehicle)

Specialized Knowledge:

Computer literate

Kind and Length of Experience:

* Experience required for 3rd shift

Experience including customer service.
