Position Summary

The primary responsibility of the Phlebotomist/Registrar is to obtain blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate techniques for clinical laboratory testing and age-appropriate patient care, including neonatal through geriatrics. Performs routine processing of laboratory specimens by verifying patient information, order entry via computer, labeling, and delivery to the testing area, handling inpatient and outpatient requests. Answers phones, routes messages, and reports safety issues such as hazardous environments and medical errors. Follows all safety instructions for handling sharps and biohazard specimens. Delivers specimens timely. The registrar duties include accurate data collection and patient registration before and during specimen collection, following established guidelines.

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen collection and handling.
  2. Identify patients properly according to hospital and laboratory policy.
  3. Register patients in the Affinity system accurately.
  4. Maintain proper documentation for all patients.
  5. Order requested tests in the laboratory computer system correctly.
  6. Schedule patients appropriately, collect correct ID and insurance information, enter data into scheduling system, confirm insurance, and scan documentation.
  7. Answer phones and assist patients, physicians, and other departments as needed.
  8. Assist the business office with billing and test ordering issues.

Laboratory administration, technical staff, nursing staff, hospital administration, support staff, patients, and families.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to: Lab Supervisor
Supervises: May assist in supervision of Phlebotomy staff upon request.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma required; completion of Certified Phlebotomy Training Program preferred.
  • ASPT or ASCP certification preferred. College programs leading to credentialing are advantageous.
  • Experience: None required; 1+ years hospital-based phlebotomy preferred.
  • License/Certification: Certification required for new hires; experienced phlebotomists may be considered without certification. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record if hired after Nov 1, 2023.
  • Skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Office, basic lab skills, excellent customer service, multitasking, and ability to work under stress. Knowledge of LIS, NexGen, EMR, HIS, medical and laboratory terminology is preferred.
