Job summary

NMH - Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital is seeking an Inpatient Coder II to perform ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and ICD-10-PCS procedure coding for complex acute care discharges. You will apply guidelines and possess strong medical terminology knowledge to ensure accurate, compliant coding.

Collaborating with CDI and physicians, you will review notes, assign POA values, and optimize MS-DRG/APR-DRG reporting to support appropriate reimbursement.

Qualifications

• RHIA, RHIT or CCS credential required.
• AHIMA membership required.
• 3 years of inpatient coding experience in an acute healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

• Assign ICD-10-CM diagnoses and ICD-10-PCS procedures for complex inpatient discharges.
• Determine Present on Admission values for secondary diagnoses.
• Review provider notes and CDI input to ensure accurate coding and documentation.
• Use CAC software to review documentation and select appropriate codes.
• Validate discharge disposition and its impact on Medicare reimbursements.
• Apply MS-DRG/APR-DRG and risk adjustment logic for proper reimbursement.
• Collaborate with CDI on discharges regarding final DRG and comorbidities.
• Educate CDI on guidelines, Coding Clinics, and conventions.
• Interpret documentation to assign principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures.
• Write appeal letters in response to payor DRG downgrades.
• Resolve validation warnings and maintain productivity and quality.
