Job summary

Dow Jones - Print Operations is seeking a part-time Machinist/Mechanic to support plant operations with skilled maintenance on mechanical systems. The role emphasizes safe, efficient troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and timely repairs to production equipment in a fast-paced printing environment.

You will perform disassembly, calibration, lubrication, and testing; read blueprints; fabricate parts; and maintain records.

Qualifications

• High school degree or equivalent work experience. Some experience preferred.
• Experience as an industrial / commercial mechanic.
• Ability to work under deadlines.
• Willingness to work a rotating shift between 1st and 2nd shift with other team members. Some weekend work required.
• Good math, mechanical, organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, stoop & reach. Must be able to lift 35-pounds.
• Welding experience.
• Understand and follow all corporate and plant policies/practices. Keep accurate, useful and timely operational and maintenance records.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical systems to include disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and calibration.
• Clean, lubricate, and adjust parts, equipment, and machinery.
• Disassemble machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs. Examine parts for defects such as breakage and excessive wear. Observe and test the operation of machinery and equipment in order to diagnose malfunctions, using voltmeters and other testing devices.
• Repair and maintain the operating condition of industrial production machinery and equipment.
• Repair and replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery and equipment.
• Study blueprints and manufacturers' manuals to determine correct installation and operation of machinery.
• Cut and weld metal to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, and assemble new equipment.
• Test all repairs upon completion.
• Record parts and materials used, and request new parts and materials as necessary.
• Record repairs and maintenance performed. Sometimes repairs or modifications are performed when blueprints and manufacturers' specifications are unavailable or incomplete.
• Knowledge of basic mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems and safe machine operation principles.
• Utilize safety and security practices and procedures following established rules and regulations and maintain a safe, clean, and secure work environment.
• Communicate with management, mechanics, and equipment operators to advise them if there are any potential mechanical hazards. Execute the maintenance work schedule as provided by his/her supervisor.
• Keeps the Foreman informed of all issues which may affect the operational capability of the equipment.
• Ensure the shop is maintained in a safe and orderly fashion.
• Attend meetings and support continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain close contact with the Foreman, maintenance crew, the production supervisors and equipment operators. Keep the maintenance supervisor and/or manager properly informed on all abnormal or critical situations and seeks advice on matters outside of their knowledge or authority.
• Perform other tasks and special assignments as requested by management.
