Job summary

Miami University seeks an Individualized Learning Specialist to provide 1-on-1 guidance helping students strengthen study, organization, and time-management skills within Athletics Academic Services JM.

The role supports NCAA and conference compliance efforts and requires a bachelor's degree with experience in education; advanced degrees and teaching certificates are a plus. The position is intermittent with 28 scheduled hours per week.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in education or related field.
• Experience working with students in an educational setting.
• At least one year of experience applying effective learning strategies in an educational setting; experience with diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Assess individual student learning needs.
• Help students develop compensatory learning skills (study strategies, organization, time management, reading and writing, note taking, test taking).
• Provide structured implementation of these skills.
• Coordinate services with on-campus academic support providers as needed.
• Maintain an electronic summary of student progress.
• Communicate with SAASS staff regarding student status and progress.
• Participate in bi-monthly staff meetings.

This position specifically supports the mission of the University and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics by assisting in institutional compliance with NCAA and Conference rules and regulations.

Job Description

• Assess individual student learning needs
• Help students develop appropriate compensatory learning skills in the areas of study strategies, organization, time management, reading and writing skills, note taking, test taking, etc.
• P rovide consistent and systematic structure for the implementation of these skills
• Coordinate services with other on-campus academic support providers as needed and in accordance to student need
• Maintain an electronic summary of student progress
• Communicate effectively with SAASS staff regarding student status and progress
• Participate in bi-monthly staff meetings

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree
• Experience working with students in an educational setting
• At least one year of experience applying this effective learning strategies in an educational setting; experience working with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

Experience gained during internships and/or graduate assistantships may be counted (at half-time) towards these requirements.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Understanding of effective learning strategies

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree
• At least one year of experience working with students in higher education
• Possession of a teaching certificate and/or at least one year of experience providing one-on-one academic support
• Professional tutoring or teaching experience is a plus
• Certification and experience in special education is also a plus
