Job summary

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) seeks an Individualized Afterschool Program Assistant to support youth with diverse needs at the Beacon site at Malcolm X Academy. This 25-hour-per-week, school-year role emphasizes relationship-building and inclusive program delivery.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree or 48 college units plus high school diploma.
  • Competency with youth on IEP and emergency response.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.

  • Experience with TK–5th grade in youth development.
  • Strong behavior management and high expectations.
  • Ability to follow systems in busy environment.
  • Current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification.
  • SFUSD Paraeducator restraint training or arrange within 90 days.

Position Purpose

An Individualized Afterschool Program Assistant is an important part of the BGCSF team and lends crucial support to youth in our programs enabling them to successfully access high quality out-of-school time experiences. As a member of a School-Based Club team, Individualized Afterschool Program Assistants possess robust youth development skills that are rooted in their relationships with youth, school faculty, and families, complemented by their knowledge and experience in the field. They demonstrate the capacity to be a positive, skilled, and reliable partner for our youth who require individualized support.

Schedule

Monday-Friday, 25 hours per week during the school year. This role is available at our BGCSF Beacon at Malcolm X Academy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning, modifying, and/or preparing program materials for assigned youth with special needs, disabilities, or unique learning styles.
  • Assist with assigned youth’s personal needs such as lifting, toileting support, feeding, and positioning if required.
  • Work in accordance with an individualized education plan (IEP) for assigned youth that is established by the school.
  • Work with individuals in small groups and large groups.
  • Assist in explanation of activities and/or other program instructions and assist youth in being successful in completion of program activities.
  • Assist in administration of assessments and record keeping related to support of assigned youth.
  • Prepare and maintain records required to be maintained by BGCSF for grant and/or internal documentation compliance.
  • Prepare, operate, and maintain equipment and supplies such as audio‑visual devices (computers, screens, etc.) and other equipment and supplies that relate to the after school program that are needed to assist assigned youth in being successful in the program.
  • Develop alternative communication supports (i.e. visuals, prepares communication devices, etc.).
  • Assist in managing program space in order to provide a positive environment for all youth.
  • Lead any needed behavior management intervention for assigned youth.
  • May assist other designated Club staff in monitoring program spaces or bathrooms in accordance with program regulations.
  • Render first aid in compliance with training.
  • Report disciplinary problems and injury and/or incidents to the Club Beacon Site Director.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
  • Associate’s Degree or higher OR 48 college units and a high school diploma.
  • Candidate should demonstrate competency in working with youth who have been designated mild/moderately impaired by an IEP, acting quickly and effectively in emergencies, working with and relating to all individuals within a culturally diverse environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to clearly communicate complex processes to program staff and Club member families.
  • Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Experience working within groups of TK‑5th grade (ages 3 through 11) in a youth development setting and ability to create strong relationships.
  • Strong positive prevention & disciplinary skills with youth with ability to manage youth behaviors and maintain high expectations.
  • Strong ability to create and follow systems and procedures in a high‑paced environment with continual distractions.
  • Current Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification (or within 90 days of employment).
  • Current training in SFUSD Special Education Paraeducator restraint policies (or within 90 days of employment, training can be arranged by Beacon Site Director).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidates who have passed the CBEST or candidates with education or coursework in Early Childhood Development, Education, or related fields.
  • Bilingual candidates are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Valid driver’s license and be able to operate a 10‑passenger vehicle.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for at least 2 hours consecutively.
  • Must be able to stoop and crouch.
  • Must be able to sit at a computer workstation for long periods of time.

Pay

The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and BGCSF needs. At BGCSF, our decisions are based on other factors and dependent on circumstances for each position. Depending on the need and requirement of the position, an individual could be hired at or near the entry-level, mid-level or top-of-the-range for their role and compensation. As such, a reasonable estimate of the current range is $23 - $25.
