Job summary

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) seeks a Beacon Director to lead the George Washington Carver Elementary School program, overseeing school-day and after-school enrichment for TK–5 students. You will partner with SFUSD, families, and community groups to provide integrated academic, social, and behavioral supports.

You will supervise a team, manage budgets and MOUs, and drive data-driven decisions to close achievement gaps while ensuring program quality and safety in a large urban

Qualifications

  • 5 to 7 years of leadership experience in a human services or education-related organization.
  • AA degree or higher OR 48 college units or equivalent OR CBEST/High school diploma-equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, manage, lead, and motivate a team.
  • Strong leadership skills, including negotiation, problem-solving, delegation, and decision-making.
  • Experience with school systems (SFUSD) and youth development programs.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

The Beacon Director provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and vision for the Beacon Community School schoolday push-in support program as well as the after-school enrichment program at George Washington Carver Elementary.

The Beacon Club Director works in collaboration with school leadership, SFUSD, San Francisco Beacon Initiative, DCYF, families, and community partners to integrate academic, socio-emotional, and behavioral support services designed to address the achievement gap and foster student success.

This position supervises the Assistant Beacon Director and a team of Program Leaders to ensure quality program operation across the schoolday and afterschool program to serve Transitional Kindergarten (TK) - 5th grade youth.

This position reports to the Director of School-Based Clubs.

  • Direct Beacon Community School Operations & Alignment
    • Provide vision and oversight for high quality TK-5th grade youth development, academic and social enrichment, family partnership, and behavioral health programming.
    • Partner with school site leadership to regularly assess student and community needs, align community resources, and utilize data to adjust programming.
    • Develop and manage the annual operating budget, program contracts, and MOUs while maintaining full compliance with SFUSD ExCEL and San Francisco Beacon Initiative policies and requirements
    • Work with Assistant Beacon Director to ensure completion of ExCEL Quality Action Plans, SFBI’s State of The Beacon, and DCYF YPQA process.
    • Coordinate with Assistant Beacon Director to ensure Club leadership presence at ExCEL Program Manager meetings, and Beacon Director meetings.
    • Recruit, develop MOUs, and coordinate with community partners and resources to serve students and families.
  • Staff Supervision & Capacity Building
    • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate full-time staff, part-time staff, contractors, consultants, and volunteers in partnership with BGCSF leadership and HR.
    • Create annual work plans, goals, foster ongoing professional development, and ensure team adherence to safety, punctuality, and high professional standards.
  • Partnership, Community Engagement & Outcome Tracking
    • Establish annual program goals, evaluation instruments, and participant outcome metrics for all age groups (TK-5th grade) in collaboration with the Director of School-Based Clubs and Vice President of Club Services.
    • Meet regularly with the BGCSF Citywide Program Services and Outcomes Measurement team members to identify collaborative opportunities and training support for direct reports.
    • Meet regularly with the school Principal, Academic Liaison, and School Site Council to ensure after-school alignment with the regular school day.
    • Oversee family outreach, marketing materials, program record-keeping, and additional funding/grant development opportunities.
What You Bring
Required
  • 5 to 7 years of leadership experience in a human services or education-related organization, with proven success in staff management, operations, and community relations
  • An AA degree or higher OR
    • Official transcripts reflecting 48 college units and a High School diploma/ equivalent OR
    • Passed the CBEST and a High school diploma/equivalent OR
    • Passed the SFUSD Instructional Aide exam
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, manage, lead, and motivate a team
  • Strong leadership skills, including negotiation, problem-solving, delegation, and decision-making
  • Innate desire to analyze operational and attendance data to drive decisions and strategic plans
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working in or with school systems (SFUSD), community-based organizations, communities of color, and low-income populations
  • Demonstrated expertise in youth development best practices, program planning, curriculum design, and evaluation
  • Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification (or within 90 days of employment)

Preferred

  • Valid driver's license, clean DMV record, and willingness to transport youth in BGCSF vehicles
  • Thorough understanding of non-profits and youth development organizations, including risk management best practices
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for at least 2 hours consecutively.
  • Must be able to stoop and crouch.
  • Must be able to sit at a computer workstation for long periods of time.

Compensation

The wage range for this position is $82,000 – $85,000 annually. Final compensation is determined based on a range of factors, including skill set, experience, training, certifications, and organizational needs. Candidates may be hired at the entry, mid, or top level of the range depending on qualifications and position requirements.

Pre-Employment Requirements

As part of the hiring process, BGCSF requires candidates to complete LiveScan fingerprinting, a background check, and a tuberculosis (TB) evaluation or test.
