Job summary

State of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Indigent Defense System, seeks a full-time Defense Counsel for the Poteau office. The attorney will represent indigent clients in state court, handle a range of felony to traffic matters, and provide zealous advocacy at all trial stages.

The role requires a Juris Doctorate, active Oklahoma Bar membership or eligibility, and willingness to travel as needed. Competitive benefits are offered.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate and active Oklahoma State Bar or eligibility to sit for the bar.
• Strong knowledge of state and federal laws and the Oklahoma constitution.
• Trial experience in felony, misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, and traffic matters is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage case files with pleadings and orders in an organized manner.
• Communicate with clients about plea discussions and post-judgment steps.
• Conduct independent investigations and gather evidence.
• Prepare for trial, file pretrial motions, and develop defense strategies.
• Perform legal research for motions and briefing; meet deadlines.
• Assist with jury selection and develop voir dire questions.
• Preserve issues for appellate review and act as Co-Counsel as needed.
• Provide guidance to other attorneys and staff; handle administrative duties.
