Job summary

State of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Indigent Defense System, seeks a full-time Defense Counsel in Woodward for the Non-Capital Trial Division. Attorneys represent indigent clients in state court trials across felonies, misdemeanors, juvenile delinquency, and traffic cases with zealous advocacy.

The role requires Juris Doctorate, Oklahoma Bar admission (or eligibility), and travel as needed. Expect collaboration within an experienced team and adherence to professional conduct rules.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws; regulations for non-capital trials; constitutional law and Oklahoma constitution.
• Skills include critical thinking; legal research; written and oral communication.
• Abilities include presenting statements of fact and law; clear articulation in writing and speech; strong analytical and research skills.

Responsibilities

• Performs case management, maintains pleadings and orders.
• Communicates with client on all case aspects including plea negotiations and post-judgement proceedings.
• Investigates cases and collects and maintains evidence.
• Prepares for trial with pretrial motions, plea negotiations, and defense theory.
• Conducts legal research for motions and briefing; participates in jury selection; preserves legal errors for review.
• Serves as Co-Counsel as assigned and provides support to other attorneys.
