Whitman College is seeking an Inclusive Excellence Senior Student Assistant in a part-time role. You will serve as a peer leader across Identity & Belonging units, onboard new student assistants, and foster an inclusive campus culture.

You will support division-wide events, co-facilitate workshops, and help coordinate cross-unit programming while maintaining student privacy and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

JOB TITLE: Inclusive Excellence Senior Student Assistant

PAY RANGE: $18.15/hour - $18.15/hour

START DATE:September 2026

JOB PURPOSE

The Division of Inclusive Excellence at Whitman College is comprised of four Identity & Belonging units: LGBTQIA+ Student Services, the Third Space Center (3SC), the Glover Alston Intercultural Center (GAIC), and Religious & Spiritual Life (RSL) along with the Office of Equity and Compliance and Title IX. These units work together to provide cultural and identity affirming spaces, programming, and educational opportunities for students at Whitman College. The Inclusive Excellence Senior Student Assistant is a division-wide leadership role designed for an advanced student with strong leadership skills and a demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging. Under the direct supervision of the Senior Director for Belonging & Inclusion, the Senior Assistant serves as a peer leader and resource for the student Identity and Belonging Student Assistants. This role requires breadth of knowledge across the communities and identities served by all four I&B units and Compliance and Title IX.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Serve as a point of contact and peer leader for Identity and Belonging Student Assistants across specialty areas.
  • In collaboration with their direct supervisors, help onboard new Identity and Belonging Student Assistants, familiarizing them with division policies, resources, and expectations.
  • Model professionalism, cultural humility, and a commitment to inclusive excellence in all interactions.
  • Assist with coordinating cross-unit communication among student staff to foster a cohesive divisional culture.
  • Identify peer support needs and elevate concerns to appropriate supervisors.
Division-Wide Programming & Projects
  • Assist Directors/Supervisor in coordinating large-scale, division-wide events and annual initiatives (e.g., Welcome Week programming, Heritage Month celebrations, End-of Year and graduation ceremonies).
  • Co-facilitate workshops, identity dialogues, and training sessions for student organizations, campus groups, and the broader Whitman community.
  • Support cross-unit programming that bridges the work of LGBTQIA+ Student Services, 3SC, GAIC, and Religious & Spiritual Life, Compliance and Title IX as appropriate.
Cross-Unit & Center Support
  • In collaboration with directors and supervisors, help to coordinate coverage and support across I&B units as needed, demonstrating familiarity with each center's culture, resources, and operations.
  • Assist with center operations across I&B spaces including the Intercultural Center, Third Space Center, Queer Resource Center, and All Faiths Room.
Student Support & Resource Navigation
  • Serve as an inclusive, affirming presence in I&B spaces and model welcoming behavior for the full student staff team.
  • Connect students with campus and community resources across multiple identity areas (e.g., Counseling Center, Title IX Office, Health Center, Food Pantry, Victim Advocate, Chaplaincy).
  • Serve as a referral and support students navigating complex or intersectional identity related concerns, using appropriate referrals and discretion.
Communications, Assessment & Administration
  • Assist with the creation and review of divisional communications, social media content, and promotional materials.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as supply coordination, scheduling, and reporting.
  • Attend regular student staff meetings, 1:1 meetings with the Senior Director, and any additional leadership meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development related to DEIBA frameworks, facilitation, leadership, and campus resources.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of concepts and communities served by the Division of Inclusive Excellence, including LGBTQIA+ identities, racial and ethnic identities, faith and spiritual traditions, and disability service.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to mentor, support, and collaborate with peers in a respectful and affirming manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, competing priorities, and deadlines with professionalism and reliability.
  • Familiarity with Google and/or Microsoft platforms and general office tools.
  • Experience with social media content creation and design tools (e.g., Canva) preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and always uphold student privacy.
  • High degree of cultural humility, self-awareness, and willingness to continue learning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Junior or Senior currently enrolled at Whitman College.
  • Must be in good academic standing with no active or pending conduct cases under review.
