Job summary

Save the Children in Jennings, LA seeks an Assistant Teacher to support preschool instruction in Head Start, promoting social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. You assist the Head Start Teacher in daily operations and build strong family partnerships while ensuring instruction aligns with quality standards.

You will engage in planning activities, supervise safely, and participate in meetings and trainings to support ongoing professional development and program quality.

Qualifications

• CDA or credential meeting CDA requirements, or enrolled in a CDA program to complete within two years.
• Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Knowledge of Head Start/Early Head Start program purpose.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; follow directions and take initiative.
• Ability to collaborate with individuals and teams at all levels, including families and community partners.
• Work with Head Start Teacher and staff to provide high-quality services.
• Keep all information on families confidential.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and online client management systems.
• Participate in professional development including first aid and pediatric CPR certification as required.

Responsibilities

• Engage with children during all activities and supervise to ensure a safe environment.
• Assist in planning activities with Head Start Teacher to meet individual needs.
• Guide classroom projects and field trips with the teacher's guidance.
• Maintain classroom management using developmentally appropriate techniques.
• Provide a developmentally appropriate learning environment and interact with children individually and in groups.
• Build effective relationships with families and colleagues.
• Practice active supervision to protect children's safety at all times.
• Collaborate with management to align with Head Start Program Performance Standards.
• Serve as liaison with staff and parents; encourage classroom involvement and home activities.
• Participate in parent-teacher conferences to discuss progression.
• Assist with health, nutrition, and personal habits education.
• Maintain records: observations, assessments, and screenings.
• Attend staff meetings, committees and training sessions.
• Contribute to documentation of in-kind activities.
• May stay late until all children depart; lead activities in the absence of a teacher.
