Job summary

Save the Children Head Start is seeking an Assistant Teacher to support preschool instruction and promote social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. You will assist the Teacher with day-to-day operations, partner with families, and ensure compliance with Head Start standards.

The role focuses on safeguarding children, following agency values, and collaborating with staff to deliver high-quality early education. Strong English skills and a CDA-related credential are essential.

Qualifications

• CDA credential or state credential or enroll in a CDA program to be completed within two years of hire.
• Professional proficiency in English (spoken and written).
• Demonstrated knowledge of Head Start/Early Head Start program purpose.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; ability to follow directions and take initiative.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate with students, families, coworkers, and community members.
• Ability to work with Head Start Teacher, other staff, parents and community partners to provide high-quality services.
• Proven ability to keep all information on families confidential.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online client management systems.
• Must participate in professional development including basic first aid and pediatric CPR certification as required by state licensing and HSPPS.

Responsibilities

• Engage with children during activities; supervise indoors and outdoors to maintain a safe environment.
• Assist in planning and conducting activities with Head Start Teacher to meet individual needs.
• Guide classroom projects and field trips with Head Start Teacher.
• Maintain classroom management using developmentally appropriate techniques.
• Create a safe, developmentally appropriate learning environment and interact with children individually and in small groups.
• Build relationships within the organization, with children and families.
• Ensure child safety with active supervision; no child left unsupervised.
• Collaborate with management to ensure compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards.
• Serve as liaison between staff and parents; encourage classroom involvement and home activities.
• Attend parent-teacher conferences to discuss development and progress.
• Assist with mealtime, teaching social and self-help skills and nutrition practices.
• Support health and personal habits (resting, brushing teeth, toilet habits).
• Assist in record keeping; conduct observations, assessments and screenings.
• Participate in staff meetings, committees and training sessions.
• Support documentation of in-kind activities.
• Flexibility to stay until all children leave; lead in teacher’s absence as needed.
