Position Overview
Impact Managers (IMs) lead and develop teams of full-time student success coaches as a team of idealistic, emerging leaders and practitioners who provide holistic support to students, classrooms, and school communities. Reporting to an Impact Director and working primarily from partner school(s), IMs play a critical role in implementing City Year’s Whole School, Whole Child (WSWC) service model, mission, and practices. This position is responsible for three core areas of work: team development and experience, school partnerships, and City Year’s impact goals. Impact Managers support their teams through a challenging and rewarding year of service while helping create the conditions for student and school success. The Impact Manager will manage one school team of 6-10 AmeriCorps Volunteers. The Impact Manager will work on‑site at their designated school placement(s) with one office‑based day during the week and select off‑site locations and remote days as approved by their Impact Director.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, Urban Studies, Youth Work, or related field preferred; experience in management, non‑profits, community service, and/or youth work acceptable.
- 2‑5 years of experience in education or comparable fields.
- At least 1 year of management experience with a strong track record of results: setting high expectations and holding self and team accountable for performance goals; developing diverse talent through performance plans, reviews, and leadership opportunities; using progress and outcome data to inform team management.
- Authorized documentation to work in the United States of America and a criminal background clearance to work with school‑age children, depending on the position.
Responsibilities
- Team Management – Lead, manage, and coach a team of 18‑25‑year‑olds completing a year of AmeriCorps service to achieve service impact with students and reach their leadership development potential. Monitor performance through consistent check‑ins, clear expectations, and timely feedback. Serve as a talent developer and mentor student success coaches through career exploration and decision‑making.
- Service Delivery & Impact – Lead the team in implementing City Year’s service model, including classroom support, individualized tutoring, schoolwide initiatives, extended learning time, and other supports aligned to school priorities. Coach team members to deliver differentiated tutoring and coaching for students in English‑Language Arts, math, and interpersonal skills development. Use and interpret student‑ and program‑level data to identify trends, guide coaching priorities, and inform decisions with school partners. Ensure accurate and timely collection and entry of service and student data.
- School Partnership Management – Serve as the primary liaison between City Year and the school, building strong relationships with principals, teachers, and staff to align service with school priorities and follow through on shared decisions. Participate in regular meetings with school leadership and partners to discuss progress, needs, and conditions for success.
- Collaboration & Learning – Collaborate effectively with teammates to achieve sitewide goals and foster an inclusive environment. Contribute to corps volunteer learning by leading or co‑facilitating training sessions during start‑of‑year onboarding and ongoing learning & development days. Reinforce centralized training through on‑the‑job coaching, reflection, and team learning activities. Role model a growth mindset and commitment to City Year’s culture and values as a leader within a youth‑serving organization.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the direct supervisor to advance City Year’s mission.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with City Year, AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, National Service is a plus.
- Proven professional relationships and experience working with/in Detroit Public School Community District or as a contracted provider with DPSCD is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and lead diverse teams of young adults, coaching young people and working with diverse populations to achieve goals.
- Experience using data to inform decisions.

Physical Requirements
- Be physically present on your assigned school campus(es) during designated work hours.
- Move around the campus as needed throughout the workday.
- Lifting and carrying instructional materials, books, and supplies up to approximately 20 pounds.
- Have sufficient vision to read printed materials, a computer screen, and observe student activities.
- Have sufficient hearing to understand conversations in person or over the phone.
- Speak clearly and be understood by students, parents, and colleagues.
- Open doors or operate a computer and other instructional technology.
- Supervise students indoors and outdoors, including during inclement weather.
Compensation
Annual salary range: $55,000 – $60,000, commensurate with experience.
